Why is my water cloudy???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sounds like a bacterial or algal bloom brought on by a heavy bio-load for a very small tank.
Those 2 large fish, in such a small puddle could easily overwhelm it, no matter what filtration.
And if nitrates are between 20-40ppm (considered high stress, in my book), because it's such a small tank, I'd be doing every other day water changes of 30-50%.

Thanks...ill definetly do more water changes...this tank is at my girlfriends apartment where she can only have a 20 gallon but I talked the manager in lettin her have a 29 gallon...I put in a uv light and its clearing up...so your saying my fish are highly stressed?

Research has shown a nitrate concentration of of 20ppm or above is considered stressful for fish.
Consider this, water with a nitrate concentration of 10ppm or higher, can cause blue baby syndrome (methemoglobinemia) in human infants 2 years old or younger.

Ok so the more water changes I do the less nitrate and less algae bloom and happy fish...im on it

I would sell the fish and pick something more appropriate for the tank size,if there is no chance of an upgrade

My tank has cleared up...definetly not selling these fish no time soon...I just got them to breed a couple weeks ago but they ate the eggs...when they breed a few times and give me plenty of ebjd fry then I will consider selling...im in the middle of looking for a 30 gallon long which is 6 inchs longer for them...
