Why is my water so dirty

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
More info is needed.
How often do you perform water changes and and how much (percent of total volume of tank)?
How often do you service (open up, clean media and fully empty) the filter?
What size is the tank, and how many fish in it (I see quite a few)?
What kind of food do you use?

Without the above, it is impossible to suggest anything.

About 60-70 sometimes 80 Every 2 weeks
Maybe every month and a half
125ish with a lot of koi
Blue ridge koi food

In my opinion, you need to be doing 60-70% water changes at least twice per week. Otherwise dirty water is the least of the issues you will experience. You can use nitrate levels as a gauge of the needed frequency of water changes. Although koi are quite hardy, they are large and messy and you have quite a few in a smallish tank.

.....just curious, did your folks raise the koi from small or did they acquire them at their current sizes?
I agree with previous advice posted, ramp up the water change schedule and beef up the filtration,if that canister is all you have there it is woefully inadequate and overworked!

They got them pretty big but they grew a lot
That fx6 was 400$ so you bet it ain’t inadequate

Well, price is no guarantee of a unit's capabilities, those are some big ass fish and are a lot for a lone canister to keep up with.
