I wanted to know what do you guys like about keeping bichirs? What made you decided to keep bichirs over all the other fish you could keep.

For me bichirs are a good community fish that I can keep with my angels and clown loaches. I had an ornate bichir before with a piranha for a few months before it got eaten by the piranha. The ornate didn't do much and just lay there. It was from this experience I thought bichirs were a boring fish that just lay there. When I got my monster tank I decided to give bichirs a try again. I did not know there were so many species of bichirs. At that time I only knew there were ornates and senegals. It was by luck that someone from MFK was selling one delhezi bichir and I went to pick it up. This delhezi I picked up was a really active one and from that point on I knew bichirs were not a boring fish. I researched and found that the dwarf species bichirs were active. I went on to get more dwarf species such as the three species of palmas, a senegal, and a bunch of delhezis. At this point I got addicted to collecting bichirs. These bichirs are such peaceful cruiser in the aquarium. They cruise around the tank all day like an arrowana. They do not bother my angels and do not knock over my driftwood decoration. Another thing is they do not knock over my heaters and filter intakes. You have my .02 on why I keep bichirs. Now I want to hear you.

I currently have 5 endlicheri and they are totally opposite to what you have described...they are very aggressive and will attack anybite size snack that swims within striking distance...I love it! :D

I also have 1 longfin senegal and one delhezi but they are a little more relaxed...

Why do i love my bichirs soooo much? Simply because they are the most awesome looking fish i have ever kept! I especially love the prehistoric look of the lower jaw species...Endlicheri's are basically what sold me on bichirs... and pretty much all other lower jaw varietries, although they are very hard to get here in Australia...:irked:

cheers,
e.:D

i like these slithering fish
have currently got 4 5"+ sens and they are just too active and its a pleasure watching them go sniffing all around the tank for food
they even attack my GTs or my oscar during feeding time if someone is eyeing the same food
now these are what i call puppy like fish
they even beg for food when i go near the tank

When I bought my first sen I picked him up simply because I thought he was unusual looking. I figured this little snake-dragon looking fish will be a cool conversation piece in my tank. Well once I got him home and saw how active he was and what a peronality he had all my other fish at the time took a back seat. I still love vicious predators. My mean ol' wolffish and one day soon I will aquire a beautiful and deadly channa, but bichirs will always remain one of my favorite fish. Started out with that one senegalus back in october and now I have many different species and about a dozen polys total.

I picked up my first senegal b/c everytime I was at petsmart, I would stop and stare at them. It didn't seem to matter what I was there for, I had to stop and see them. I started keeping cichlids, but lost interest after I got hooked on bichirs. I now have one cichlid (had 6 baby sa/ca and 1 senegal) and 9 polys (plus 3 ropes). There's just something about oddballs that I'm hooked on.

Hehe, yeh, like someone once said to me...

" Theres two types of fish, tankbusters....& feeders "

And i know what you mean about "oddballs"... nothing worse than a guy showing you his wikid new tank...full of electric yellows and other boring feeder fish...

:headbang2 well I like my bichirs because they look vary interesting and they have ancient look about them. well I have 2 tanks with bichirs and if could only keep 1 fis:)h it would be them. never sick easy care for fun to watch

I like the prehistoric attitude and look they have about them. They're like little snakeish dragony things!:D

first off they are AFRICAN, secondly they are prehistoric, third long with different colors, 4th absolutly the funniest set of fish to watch hunt and swim, great conversation piece because everybody else has "feeder africans", and last but not least THEY ARE MONSTERFISH!!!:headbang2

I have 1- sene 11", 1 delhezi 11", 1 beut 12", 1 lap 10", 3 ornates 12-14"'s, and had a weeksi at 8"'s {dont know why he died but still have him frozen in the freezer}. my next batch will be lower jaw bichirs eventually getting an ansorgi and the big congi. :nilly::popcorn::D:WHOA:
