Why or What Do You Like About Keeping Bichirs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why? because i bought the large senegal on the spot.
What do i like about them? watch them for 10 minutes and you will understand.

Bichirs are the only fish that are beautiful even when they are stationary. Even when they are taking a rest on some drift wood or rocks, they exhibit great beauty with their stripes and patterns and all.

I bought my first two senegal more than 10 years ago and I have been keeping them ever since. I believe this will be my life long hobby!

I first saw them on here, and I'd never seen them in any of my lfs. I thought they were beautiful. Then one day, they had a small delhezi at my lfs for $50. I bought it on the spot. Once you have one.. it doesn't take long to want more! They are just so beautiful and they do look like little water lizards. I can watch mine for hours and hours.

I love them because every part of their lifespan is amazing... from the time they are tiny little babies, attacking food the size of their whole head with spunk and attitude (and you can look at them and imagine how huge they will be... :D )... to the "teenage" years where you can watch them work out their social step on the ladder. You can watch which fish they back down to - and which fish they become dominant over. And as adults, you can see them thinking things out in their head as they lay silent on the bottom. Majestic, prehistoric, intelligent, aggressive... I also love that they have a nice long lifespan so they become part of your family. Not to mention... they're totally awesome when they rip into a feeder fish! :D

Keepers, funny that to think bichirs are smart. I think bichirs are pretty dumb since they bump into everything when they're swimming. They do not eat from the surface and defnitely do not react to feeding time like my cichlids. I still like laying on the gravel like a pack of seals on a shore.

They have a magestic look about them with their fins raised, posed on the gravel or on an outcropping. They are predators who get large, but don't require a HUGE tank. They are predators who don't mess up the gravel, plants and decorations. They are not so aggressive so they can be kept with fish too large for them to eat. No one seems to mess with them. They are great fish.

I think my addiction has started (i agree with everyone who collects one then starts collecting a bunch of polys), i kinda gave up on fish since i have only 1 albino zebra cichlid, and starting collecting turtles (diamonback terrapins) but bichir has brought the light to the fish world again, they look soo awesome.. lol i have a senegal from petsmart about 3inch gonna grow him out in a 30 gallon then get him to a 75 gallon :)
