Why or What Do You Like About Keeping Bichirs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like the prehistoric look and their snake-like appearance. The spikes on their back is awesome too.
It's funny when someone comes to my house and they ask, "WTF is that?"

well i wanted a snakehead...but after hearing they were illegal i was wanting something similar to one, and i saw wolf fish and bichirs. it just happened i saw some senegals for sale at a lfs and i picked one up. he was so cool looking and active and he was a pretty good predator, so i started looking into picking up more of them....which has been very hard for me as i only have 2 senegals at the moment. (can't even find an ornate, palmas polli or delhezi locally).

I enjoyed keeping Bichirs because of theiry prehistoric look as well.

I remember when I had my 75 gallon with 3 Senegalus Bichirs that it was always an adventure watching them. I felt like I wasn't keeping a "fish", but more of a dinosaur. To mee, they'll always look more dinosaur-ish than fish.

They are indeed the best species of fish in my opinion. (All of the Polypterus family)

I'm hoping to get a nice new acrylic tank soon, and as soon as I do I'll be stocking that bad boy up with some nice Bichirs.

...After cycling the tank of course. =)

The first time I saw a bichir, I didn't know what it was. I saw a bright green sen at a wal-mart and it looked like a coelacanth to me, so I became really interested in them.

A couple years later when my aquarium skills became more advanced, I bought a baby ornate and the obsession blew up from there. :)

Shame on you for buying fish at Walmart.:banhim::hitting::nutkick:

I didn't buy the sen dude

I got the ornate (my first bichir) from a place called "Petown" in the OC that closed a couple years back. Back then, that small ornate costed $50

my first bichir i raised in my above ground pond. i really enjoyed its presence there, grew to about 17" and then it died when it decided to relocate from the pond.

these fish are sooo unique as not a lot of people raise them here in my place. i must also note that they are a hardy/sturdy bunch, as they don't easily die off. :headbang2

i love polys because they are really fascinating.
i love how they act really stupid when looking for food. :D
and their prehistoric looks.
and how different they are from many fish.
im even thinking of selling some of my other fish to make room for more bichirs.
i got a senegal about a year ago and he was my only bichir at the time.
then my uncle decided to give up fish keeping and gave me his tank along with another senegal.
i kept those for almost a year then sold them to buy smaller bichirs since most bichirs i find round here are small.
now i have more than 10 bichirs and increasing. :D

i like how they look, and i also like how they are prehistoric and breathe air!
