Neewbie from Norway here...

I`ve been reading some of the threads in here and i just wonder...

What made YOU choos the type of fish you got ? what made you take the desicion of setting up a monsterfish tank instead of plain "neons an guppys" ?

I find larger fish facinating but i realize they do need a bigger space than the usual fish in store.
So... convince me... give me a little mental support in my consideration :)

Well it greatly depends on the fish. My arowanas are housed because I love the way they swim. The puffer 1 was free, and 2 has an attitude I have never seen in a fish. Royal knife beauty and elegance. Plecos, well that's just my thing.

i started with community fish, but they got boaring fast. i got a 12in clown knife that i have had for almost a year now, and he is awsome. i got 2 aros and i think they are absolutely stunning. got some monster angels just cuz. rest of my monsters (mini) are kinda lame, got oscars, shovel nose cat. but the few that i listed befor are the reasons that i got rid of my community (big one) tank. also i think what realy drawed me to it was that most of the mini monsters that u see in the pet stores, just get prittyer with age.

what is a "monster angel" ? scientific name ?

he he... and with a little blushing face.. does "paratheraps synspilum" count as a "monsterfish" ?
(i have absolutely no idea, i just like the cichlids)

buy a big ass tank, fill it with beautiful monster fish and you will convince yourself when your done, and you catch yourself sittin infront of the tank for hours each n every day. you dont need our words, you need a tank in your possession with fish you like most.

i like Gars because there awesome looking. Silver Arowana's because of the way they think. he's like having a pet dog in a tank, seems like he communicates once he gets used to you. tells you when he's hungry, or even that his tank is to small for him lol. bichirs are awesome, archers are dope...

i guess you can say im into weirdo fish.

he he he.. well, I would love to buy a "big ass" tank but ther is a minor problem called space.

but if i do feel the urge i just go to Roy L. and go photomaniac in his tank ;)

There are big monsters like aros and gars, there are monster eaters like puffers, there are monster aggressives like cichlids, there are monster behaviors like archers spitting. There are so many things that you could consider monster. I fed some daphnia to some tetras today, and wow that is fun to watch.

I personally always have a community tank, a reef community tank... and for some reason always have a killer/angry tank with monsters that are always ready for some shredding. Large fish are always fun to watch, they at times resemble dogs with their mannerisms. Many Aro's will like to be petted, same as gars and the occasional red cat and oscar. I kept a 18" pacu that was about 5lbs, all because his temperment and sociability. So when it comes down to it, look for what monster attracts your eye, then research their needs.
Its all in opinion my friend.

Its all the same reason some people like bulldogs and some only like chihauas.... sometimes you just need a beef that likes to run its head into things.

Big fish have great personalities and are just like real pets. They know who their owner is and who feeds them and when they are fed and some will feed from your hand. Little fish swarm at the top whenever you go near it. Monster fish are proper pets and are more exciting to watch at feeding time too.

Bigger fish also have so much presence than little fish. I bet that one ray would get a bigger gasp than 100 neons all in one tank, due to its beauty and the way it moves. You can just look at it and know that you are looking at something very special.

Carl.
