Why type of Vieja?

Nope, it's a bifas. Look at the dark area on the back. Funny. Each time someone cannot positively identify a fish, it's a hybrid.

How is that a positive ID? A lot of viejas have that dark area on the back

Its definitely a black belt. Vertical bar, blue hue, red throat and little to no red on face. Looks like an older one. Bright eyes and loss of color could signify the fish is ready too breed that may be why its not clear whether the fish is pure on not. But I would say the fish is a black belt for sure. Just a different location collection then the norm. Black belts are wildly dispersed and vary from location to location. Wes was telling me about some he caught near the brackish waters that were almost completely red.

Definitely not a bifa. The consensus is that it's a bb. Only two people have questioned that.

Are you guys totally missing the synspilum rear on this fish ? And the front, for that matter, if you know what you're looking at, and have enough experience with the various species.

I've never seen a syn with that kind of red on its caudal fin.

BB x Syn. That is the two fish I see in one here.

Syn's adult Body frame and white chin. Then some BB's dominating colors but it is not pure BB's colors either. It's mixed Syn

Case closed.
