Its the chlorine mostly. It supposed to burn thier gills. Yeah I mean the smell is what it is. I wouldnt stop drinking tap water because of it. Youll be fine. If money is tight then try useing your tap water in frequent smaller water changes. think 10% a day instead of 30-50 a week. What kind of fish is it?

10% a day uses way more water and thus costs much more then 30-50% a week

10%/day=70%/week

Just a pain that the company that charges for water use here charges for when it comes out the pipes and then charge us again when the water goes down the pipes.

so start watering your plants and **** with the water instead of sending it back down the drain ;)

I got a well....YEA!!(i hope it dont kill me or affect me)

i believe the key difference is the chlorine we drink doesnt really enter our blood system, the chlorine mostly passes through are digestive system unabsorbed. unless we inhale it, which can happen in hot shower. but people still feel its with in the safe levels, granted i would avoid it if possible. and people are switching over to chloramines which evaporate less.

in the fish the chlorine interacts directly with there gills, which it burns. and im guessing enters the blood system.

key thing to think is breathing chlorine is bad, weather your a fish or human.

personally i would avoid chlorine or chloramine if possible.

most companys just calculate it off the water usage not what actually goes down the drain.

I love it when people talk about avoiding drinking tap water and the importance of buying bottled water or high end filtration... Then run off to McDonald's to buy their lunch...

I think a whole lot more people die every year from poor diets than from drinking to much chlorinated water... :P But we each have the right to choose our own battles...

This seems like a good place to also point out how many of us believe that adding tap water to our aquarium will instantly kill off the bacteria in our tank... yet we drink chlorinated tap water and it has absolutely no impact on the bacteria in our stomachs... And yes, for anyone who didn't know, we rely heavily on bacteria for digestion ;)

Fun topic!

Also I am of the opinion 90% of people don't drink enough water. The stuff is essential to wash out impurities from our bodies. A lot of people I work with drink nothing but soda and coffee. Their energy is crap and well... some of them look like crap (yet I leave work and can pull off 1-2 maybe 3 hours of rigorous exercise). Many friends growing up did not hardly ever drink water then tried to convince me later on their kidney stones were most likely genetic...

Anyways. NC_Nutcase brings up a good point about poor diet killing many more people. I agree 100% but poor fluid intake is really bad also (Drinking mostly carbonated beverages ) Carbonated drinks and soda's actually ossify your bones...

So are you suggesting...

Even if all that is available is chlorinated city water... The evils of drinking a lot of water are much smaller than the evils of not drinking very much water...

I could definitely agree with that...

It doesn't kill us immediately, so it's hard to link. But it does contain harmful levels of many substances like flouride and chlorine. Once people figure out that we only have to rinse our mouths with flouride, not drink it, they will take it out of the tap water. Until then, wave goodbye to your kidneys every time you drink a glass of water...

Pretty much, hence why I never drink water out of the faucet, and I don't buy normal drinking water either because a lot of the times the companies just get it out of the faucet anyway. I drink perrier mineral water.

But hey, the pharmaceutical industry (which is in bed with the FDA) gets money out of people being sick so it's all good for them.

But anyway my sister used to use tap water for her saltwater fish tank until we realized that there were heavy metals in there that raised the nitrates.
