I don't understand the fascination with hybrids and genetic mutations.

Hybridization and genetic modifications gave us things like killer bees.

They might seem wonderful when they are new and exciting but as time goes on we understand them more we realize the true nature of these man made creations.

Sometimes these frankenstein creations exhibit "hybrid vigor" which allows them to reproduce faster or out-compete existing species. The results are rarely good.

Genetic manipulation of food is totally misunderstood and most people view it as some kind of "good thing" because it makes farming more reliable or something like that. Not quite.

Now back to the topic...

Every Discus breeder claims to have their own strain...ya know... pidgeon blood, orange mango, whatever... To me they represent a genetic NIGHTMARE.

Blood parrots cannot close their friggin mouth?!?

There are so many wacked out goldfish to list...bubble eyes, brain looking "orandas"...

The flower horns are the the newest thing and I'm sure they won't be the last.

So now you know my opinion on this, please share yours.

I believe these taboo threads don't have a place in the Hybrid forum..

It creates arguments and flame wars, that are unneccesary. This forum section is specifically dedicated to those who ENJOY hybridizing their fish, not a place for opposing views to duke it out.

Not trying to be pushy, but don't be surprised if this thread is closed, because it could just turn into a heated debate with no real end in sight.

I see your points however, but there are alot of things that hybridization does do good. I am sure you have owned a Dog at one point in your life, was it 100% wolf?...

A guppy..? A Molly..? majority of the aquaria fish are from selective breeding and hybridization.

This is a love/hate relationship. Personally, I think it's ok as long as it stays in the hobby. Many of the "pure" fish were probably a hybrid at one time, but occured naturally. This can/probably will be a heated discussion, which is ok as long as it stays at that.
Lets keep a civil discussion and hear everyones side:)

I agree with Rallysman..

I have no problems with hybridization and selective breeding, within the hobby. It makes things interesting, more colorful, and a challenge to some.

Mutilation and phsyical Modification of the fish is what disgusts me. (clipping tails, acid dips, dye injections..)
