Widebar Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see alot of negativity in this thread, sure hope its all in good humor :-)
I've always wondered why some fish are so hard to breed, and other so easy.
Can't fault someone for chasing a dream. Can't be done sounds like a challenge to me. I like challenges.

islander671 aka Ed :) : Those babys you got in '06??(the ones you have in a picture thread 'round here somewhere) in JP were they pre-ban or "illegals"?

That is our main concern right now and unlike alot of people on here, we realize there is no real demand for these fish to do something like this.
I would think something like US$25 farmgate price for a ST no bigger than 1 inch, without grading and a minimum 100 pcs order, is reasonable. Ofcourse, that's just shooting off without accurate assessments for cost-benefit, environmental impact, conservation etc.

We will be using LHRHa. One thing is dosage, if I remember correctly, it is around 1microML/1kg of fish? If so, and because we dont have the most sophisticated of equipment, it is going to be hard to dose a fish that weighs maybe .5kg.
What's the concentration of your LHRHa preparation? I don't quite understand the metric system and is microML microlitre? or micromillilitre? I'm not sure if I've seen micromillitre in imperial S.I. units and if so, it would mean nanolitre to me.

No need for sophistication, you dilute with a solvent. Saline will do, for a first try. Prep mixture into perhaps 0.3-0.6 mL per point injection.

I will be getting contact with you to work out a few kinks we have run across! BTW, I am in Louisville, KY and my buddy is currently working on his Masters in fisheries Mgt at Arkansas Pine Bluff. We will be doing this over the summer at my house.

It'll will have to be indoor then. How's daily temperature fluctuation in your summer?

Your friend can help you. Let me know.

Lets all just hope for the best that STs really are actually pretty easy to spawn! My personal goal isnt to gain money, but to get that "perfect" ST! Of course I dont want to waste alot of money either!

Let's hope, at the least in earnest, for conservation.

not being neg but give them away to people who helped you dont count your chickens before they are hatched :D

Why dont you try on other types of dats first? I'm pretty sure most people will be reluctant on handing over their large ST's. Why not large indos? The market is saturated with them. Maybe they are easier to breed? Just my 2 cents but If your really trying to breed because your looking for that perfect ST and involving time and money in this project, where are all your dats? I would think that if your going to go through the trouble you would be a serious dat keeper and have quite a few large specimens. I guess my assumption was right that you were going to force breeding than attempt natural. I also think that dats are in great demand. But thats just my opinions.

Could a mod make this thread a sticky. I am really curious what the outcome will be in a year time...

So the race is on, which comes first, breeding STs versus Curing cancer.

I am in the process of translate a vids about Dats in Thailand which is very good information and will help JD with his project. It's worth of try.

Pulcher if you think Thailand water are clean, please rethink again. I live in Thialand many years, and been swimming in Mangkong River numberus of time. Im telling you now that, that river are NOT clean at all.

So THAT is what is wrong with Sticky~! JK man!

LongQ, I meant microliter and we will be doing it in-doors. My friend is doing the technical aspects where I will be handling that aquisition of the adult fish, setting up and maintaining the tanks and rearing the fry once/if the become free swimming.

SinisterJ, there is no point in doing it in oter dat species, our costs are already too high and there is ALMOST no point in doing it with STs. I am not asking any one to give me a large STs, Im wanting to buy them!!!

Ive been quoted around $30-50 a piece.

It depends..lol...based on some reading i did last night on some JP sites there has been at least some type of restrictions on them since 13 Apr 1989. Although at time they were known as not known as D. Pulcher, but instead as Micrloepis. So probably a restriction on the collection point? In more recent years it seems that they either strongly enforce the old restriction or exclusivly banned them from export.
On a somewhat positive note, i did read on those same sites that "Breeding is possible but highly difficult in Home aquaria." But again w/ no hard evidence, thats like anyone on this board saying the same thing.

How do you like the Books? Maybe you'll have better luck translating the "Datniode breeding guide" and can pass on some info to JD762.
