I agree with them. Basically without the press the gov can do wat ever it wants. Plus with wiki maybe the gov can work on some better network security. If they are dumb enough to let info get stollen than they deserve the crap they get from it.

alot of the stuff about the iraq war was about the budget and troop count, now in a way it could show where we don't have a large defense but on a person to person base i believe more names were redacted like the recent "cables"

I could be wrong, I never read them, tho I do approve of wikileaks...

Id like to point out before someone goes on about WL being an anarchist site, or something along those lines, all the leaks posted on WL have also been published in news reports. The Times got the same leaks as WL, and WL actually worked with the times to know which names to take out.

WL got the same data and worked with news agencies in the Iraq files and such. Not this time around. Not only that but they are posting data stolen from the govt and if you or I did that here in the US we woudl see the inside of a small cell quickly.

All this does is put the US in a very bad position with allies, enemies, and impartial countries. A lot of the data is pretty comon knowledge BUT there is also a lot of data that does not show the other context and previous conversations and such. For example the Yemen files not showing discussions with other assets and such well in advance of the strike.

We have a govt that for better or worse is expected to be the defender of the free world. We are the ones other countries turn to to do dirty work since we have assets. Though we also have to be sure what the rest of the world is doing as well so we do not overstep or take one country's word as the end all.

Releasing these files will not stop any of this from happening. All it does is undermine operations or policies that are in place and piss off even more people around the world with the US when in most instances THEIR govts are doing the same or worse things. Can you imagine if there were a wikileaks for Iran, Russia, China, Israel, Venezeula, ect.???

I'm pretty sure the post, or the nytimes got a copy of the cables.

Also, wikileaks isn't the one "stealing" the data, if they were that'd be a different issue...they just archive everything thats been leaked to them

The recent cables were stolen for wikileaks and the only data that the Times and such got were given to them or pulled from wikileaks site. They did not get the source materials that WL got.

The guy who stole the data is already in custody AFAIK and can be tried with treason for stealing classified data...also as far as I know death is still the punishment for treason...

Also just because WL did not steal the data himself does not make it any less of a crime. Your friend steals a car and you get in knowing it is stolen and drive it around you are still guilty of recieving stolen goods....

You will see news agencies quickly start to pull away from posting actual data from WL as it has become radioactive and no one wants that on their hands. The world is going to come down on WL.

Giving the death penalty for the soldier who stole the materials would also go a long way to deter stealing confidential information in the future.

 we build the important parts of your subs

just kidding id be surprised if we soon dont see a headline
