Well, I just caught a wild blue crayfish. Definitely the same species as the red ones I find at the same creek. But this one is a nice a darkish blue.
It's a female and is currently mating with my best looking males. I know most of the babies won't be blue, but how many is that? And can crayfish interbred without serious deformities? How rare is the blue mutation anyways? Is it possible to make a profit from them? I almost caught a white one too, but I don't think those are too rare, are they?

I don't nkow how common blues are in the wild as I just recently got into crayfish, but I can tell you I just paid $12 plus shipping for a baby white one lol! You might grab one next time, someone like me would pay money for it lol

Cool lol, I don't think it was the same species as the other crayfish there though, as it was like, 7 inches. I was afraid of it lol. Others don't get beyong 4 inches.

You were afraid of it? lol That's funny. I just got my 1st cray 2-3 wks ago and tried to get my husband to hold him up so I could get a picture. He informed me he "wasn't touching that bug". lol

looks like a P. alleni. Pretty common color, but i don't know how common in the wild.

chances are that isn't "wild" if you mean that it was from florida originally. im pretty sure that it was probably released by somebody into the canal or wherever you found it. it really wouldn't be suprising, florida's waters (and the rest of it for that matter) have become somewhat of a biological dump where unwanted fish and reptiles are released into the wild.

But the thing is that it looks exactlly like the other red crayfish in the creek. Same size as the other females, same claws, same shell pattern.
Everything. Why would the red crayfish mate with it if it was a different species, is that possible?
