Want your guys opinion on weather or not I should get this pair of WC croc monitors.. The guy says that the male is handable but the female is basically a succubus... Anyway I plan on breeding these in an outdoor enclosure. So I was wondering if I should take the chance at trying to breed these, specifically to just entroduce offspring into the trade for expanding the gene pool a little, and maybe a little profit. But I would like to know what you guys think I should do?
The enclosure will be 8' tall, 22' wide, and about 36' long, with a filtered pond and basically built out of plywood, and caging. I live in southern Cali also..
I know the pond doesn't matter, but this is MonsterFishKeepers..lol

are you commited? do you know how to induce mating for this species?

no point of buying these two giant monitors and building this huge enclosure if you're not serious about it.

especially if they don't end up producing any offspring.

I guess if you have to ask, then you're probably not really convinced yourself.

I'm commited, I am going to get a croc monitor no matter what, just wondering if it is worth trying to breed them..

id breed them cause then you can sell cb's and thats always good

You mean money? Or the time and effort that is required?

I know babies sell for hundreds, up to 1K each so I've sure that once they do start breeding, it'll be worth quite a bit of $$$.

Hell, I might even buy one from you if you succeed. :D

But I don't know what goes into breeding them, so I don't know about the time/effort. Since they're not readily available, I'm sure it's quite an investment of time and patience.

I think N.E.R.D. has a breeding project going on for a while now. Not sure on the success rate.

Go for it but make shure they are healty, have a exotic vet ready and make shure they are eating;)

You can go for it if you want but your going to need an indoor enclosure as well, there not going to be able to live outside year round most likely even though your in CA. Your going to need alot of visual barriers, lots of hides both high and low and some plants to keep the pair happy
If you want me to give you some experienced croc monitor keepers emails send me a pm and i will send you there info. Just to give you an idea one person who has been successful with crocs and other large species now doesn't dig up there eggs as he feels most people don't have the room to properly keep them. I think he should keep breeding them but i due see his point in that he would not want to see his babies kept in bad conditions and die. At the same time i would rather see a CBB animal replace some of the wc in captivity and if some die in the hands of people it wont affect wild ones as much.

I already have plans for a 12'L by 8'W by 6' T indoor enclosure for them in winter months and during hybernation.
I have more than enough outside for them, I have already started leveling the grounds and getting the lumber, I have yet to find a veternarian that will take on examining crocodile monitors though.. So If anyone knows any in cali, please PM me. I would love their email addresses.
As for breeding, I won't expect any for sometime, especially since they wil still be babies themselves at only 3-6' But if I do succesfully breed them you can garuntee that the babies will be the cheapest around, But only if you can provide the proper means of housing them, I don't want these going anywhere near someone that thinks a 8x4x4 can house these for life or similar sized enclosure. I love these monitors, they are my all time favorite, besides black throats and lace monitors. But I want to do this, But need to find a vet that will take on looking at these first, The person I am supposedly getting them from says the importer does not check for parasites or anything, just catches them makes sure they are alive and ships them. So I am also iffy on that situation.
I will keep you all updated as well If do get these beauties.:D

Make two separate cages for them to winter in, the last thing you want is for a fight to ensue because of lack of space. Build two 8x4x4 and then bring them together in the large outdoor enclosure during the warmer months. If they look healthy and well hydrated there will be no need for a vet. Keep us posted and if you need more detailed help pm me.
