Wild caught Jack Dempseys from Cenote Cristalin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's awesome to see wild-caught Dempseys in the hobby. They've become so commonplace that I tend to overlook them in the LFS, but now that I'm thinking about it, I've never seen a wild-caught or F1 fish. I'm also interested to see how their shape, color, and vitality compare to the domestic ones. Looking forward to updates!

Very envious, they'll be some good looking fish. Nice catch

Any updated pictures of these guys? What ever happened to them?

A few months back I was snorkeling in Cristalino, it is a bit brackish (very close to the sea). The most populous fish were sailfin mollies, about 100 to 1 to the JDs.

There are large rocks everywhere (size of smart cars) that are covered in algae.

Beside Mollies and Jds. I saw half dozen catfish. and a sleeper goby.

The JDs tried to eat mollies but missed at least 90% of the time, grazed algae in between strikes.
Many of the male JDs had torn up mouths and shredded fins from sparing.

That is very cool Duane tanks for posting those pics. Did you bring any back with you? So I guess if I was ever to set up a JD tank some Mollies to pump out feeders would make a nice little biotope.
