Wild caught vs. Tank raised.

I don't understand why you would be mad if the guy posted pics of the fish though and didn't tell you if they were wild caught or captive bred. Personally i buy fish because of their looks, not their origin. And even though the wild caught ones might be the strongest of their species in the wild, they still may not be fit to keep in an aquarium. Plus do you trust him either way? Couldn't he just say they were wild caught or weren't? How are you going to know?

I mean I can say yeah this amphilophus labiatum is wild caught! nobody can really argue with me or disagree. There really isn't any proof. I think wild caught fish are neat, but it stresses the fish out more and makes it more prone to disease through all the catching and shipping and such (with saltwater fish this is a huge problem). I will just stick with the captive bred specimens that are used to living in a glass box. Less stressful for them and less stressful for me.

I would only trust buying wild caught fish from Rapps anyway, or ones that I caught myself on a trip. Basically I mean that I woudln't worry to much about what an internet seller says between wild caught or captive bred because theres no way you will ever truly know.

:shakehead

Once again, not surprising to see in the Cichlid side of the hobby. I find lots of Cichlid hobbyists to be this way, very judgmental and arrogant. You wouldn't get controversy in other areas of the hobby like you do in the Cichlid side. It disappoints me esp with BS statements like your "true hobbyist" crap, what just cause he doesn't see the point in getting wild caught fish :screwy: Also BS like "WC for the true enthusiast,TR for the laymen/beginer" Yeah, alright, can you say tickets.

I wonder how many of these 'true' Cichlid fans keep abominations like flowerhorns, parrots and other X breeds. (obviously you don't XR as you said all your fish are WC). But what do you guys think of people who keep these fish, are the "into the hobby as much as you"?

Yet our fish can seriously eat your stupid little show dogs!
You do not realise the true magnitude of this hobby and addiction untill you are actually one yourself, a ]V[onster Fish Keeper.

Have you ever seen a dog go for $85,000? Fish do. You obviously revert to my statement in my sig, that you are a Fish-HAVER!!!

No, i am saying that this guy is simply stateing, that fish are not important, it doesn't matter whether it's wc, or tr'ed. because they simpley are not important but dogs are more so.;) reading comprehention my friend, i wasn't mentioning anything on the wc/tr side of it in that post

It's called trust, something that SHOULD exist between fellow hobbyists and a dealer and buyer. If someone wants to know if their fish is WC or not they shouldn't be given crap for it, it's a simple question to answer and it could very well make or break a sale.

I know you have to trust them, but thats ALL you can do. There is no proof. I am not denying the trust aspect, but how much do you trust someone over the web? I mean you can make a very legitimate sounding sales pitch. I could throw out facts about where the fish was caught from referring to its natural habitat and how I went on a catching trip to get it, and just bs you.

How well do you trust me?

I do live on mars.

I can type whatever I want and nobody can deny me it is fact. And basically any good salesman is going to say whatever they want to sell a fish. So honestly I don't think it matters that the vender or salesman or whatever said it was wild caught or not. Its trivial because there is no proof.

Even if there was proof like pictures or something of him catching and bringing fish back. He could put a different fish that was in the picture and send it to you, its not like you are going to be counting the spots on your dovii to see if its the same one in the picture.

And you can't honestly say you are bringing an entire new crop of fish into the hobby. Farms provide the cheapest prices to pet stores. And I simply can't see any business buying wild caught jags from you when they can get them for seriously about a dime a piece. Unless you are giving the fish to them and going around like you are Johnny Appleseed traveling across the US giving F1s to PetSmarts, then I don't think you are going to really change the majority of the fish in petstores being tank bred or farm raised.
