Probably looking at like 1/4" or less a month. Theres people who have had them for a year with no growth or like an inch. Mels are like 16" or so from what he said but are like 4+ years old and have taken a while to get there. Probably looking at a 4-5" fish after a year or so

Thanks for the insight Forrest.

I've heard that's an extremely rare cichlid. I like to know which one is better from Cichlasoma Ornatum and Cichlasoma Gephyrums.

I don't know, dont have any experience with either.

You know my thoughts on it. Think about the ornatum craze last year or the year before - where are all these hundreds (if not thousands) of fish that got shipped out all over the USA? Dead most likely. Either from aggression or bloat.

Here were Mel's ornatum back in 2008 and a few months ago (Feb).

Kind of what makes it a bit intriguing. But I don't know, still torn.

Don't bother.

Why? Please explain your thoughts - if you don't mind.

I would go for it. They are rare and beautiful regardless of which fish they are. If you are impatient then pass. Otherwise why not be one of they people trying to introduce them to the hobby? If someone is successful at breeding them them we will have fish that will be more likely to survive in the aquarium. Eventually we will have a bloodline that more people can keep alive under normal conditions.

I would say get them, although they are slow growers, so you would have to have patience. They are beautiful cichlids once they reach adult size. I have raise mines from 2 inches, never had problems with bloat, the first I have heard of Ornatum susceptible to bloat, maybe I was lucky. I have all the cichlids listed in my signature block.

How big are they now? Any signs of spawning?

Slow growers are an understatement. I had juvies at 1.5" and 5-6" fish as well as a 10" male. I had the large ones for about a year with zero growth from what i could tell. The small ones all died to some mysterious bacterial infection i had in one of my tanks that ive never seen before. They prefer cooler water around 70-76F as i had my tanks at or around 80F and they turned yellow and sat at the bottom til i lowered it to about 75. I didnt have much luck with them. I kept the large ones in a 125g divided tank and the juvies in a 75g

Is this an Ornatum? Someone in the UK is selling these.
