Wild Odoe Pike pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice photos....shows just how beastly these fish are capable of getting.

Huge difference in he appearance of WC vs the ones we raise.....

Would love to know more about their natural habitat. Wonder if it's even possible for us to replicate close enough to make a monster that looks like WC ones do......

I've always liked these fish.... Agree with Rob 110%, these things are much more suitable for most peoples tanks then say Payara or ATF. Seem very hardy compared to the other 2 as well.

Damn, these wild ones are amazing. I don't think I've ever seen shots of them with such visible teeth like that, but then again most odoes in a tank setting don't normally have their mouth being pulled open by a fisherman...

Do they just not hit max size in an aquarium setting, or are they just super slow growing once they get to a certain size? I know some types of fish (like a serrasalmus rhombeus for instance) never hit anywhere near their max size in an aquarium, no matter how long they're kept. Wonder if that comes into play with more species than I originally thought. Either that or people aren't keeping us updated on the older beastly ones nearly as often.

I have 4 with my gatf.

Nice group

As far as their natural habitat, they like slow moving waters with vegetation here's a good link: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/Hepsetus_odoe/

Idk how true it is but I heard that they won't reach wild sizes(26-28in) in aquaria. The biggest that I've seen in person was a trio of 15-16inchers someone traded in at a lfs.

I think they fall into the same category as Tats. They're so overshadowed by the apex predators that live in the same waters that most people loose interest and obtain the apex preds then house them together which eventually leads to the hindering or even the demise of the smaller species.

When is the last time anyone saw a decent sized Tat? Probably longer ago then we saw a decent sized Odoe.

I agree both species get overshadowed...hmm...that might be a good setup Odoes and Tats if the odoes don't outgrow and kill the tats. From reading on here it seems like Tats almost stop growing in aquariums around 11-12", someone needs to import some larger ones or something.

It would be a perfect match in my opinion..... As long as the Tats are 8+" I think it would work fine. Odoe grow super fast so as long as the Tats are grown out first it should work great. Maybe add some Cudas, or try to track down the ever so elusive Bicuda as the apex for the tank. Cynopotomus, Cyno Gibbus, Scombs, Chalceus, and Pike Characins could also all potentially fit.

I'd have to witness Odoe killing anything to become a believer that these fish even have a mean bone in their body.... lol. I've kept a lot over the years and have yet to witness any real aggression aside towards food....... I know there's plenty of stories out there, just have never personally experienced any. :grinno:

Those wild Odoes are killer! I am loving this surge of Odoe-love I'm noticing recently.

Time to start doting on mine a bit more.
