So can you tell if it's naturally from the wild?

Between line bred and wild, yes. Line bred aren't going to look like the nature appearance of the fish.

Maybe you should have added a third option; wild, captive, or line bred. I think most would choose captive bred.

I'm opposed to line bred fish if you mean fish that are inbred over and over to get certain colors or characteristics.

I prefer F1's for many of the reasons already stated. Just as good in color imo without the threat of over capturing and endangering a species. Also they're born in an aquarium opposed to being taken from a huge lake or river and stuffed in a small box.

I was unable to vote due to F1 not being an option.

no not F1's(cb), nor inbreeding. Just selective breeding. Mean picking the most vibrant of different batches and breed it 5+ generations later to achieve.

vs.

Wild caught. Caught from the wild and looks average but from the natural wild.

Even though I'm sympathetic with you guys being concerned about taking a wild fish from the wild and putting him into a box, I have to think the absence of predators has to make their blood pressure drop a bit! Hahahaha!

I voted wild because line bred are basicly mutants. To clarify that a bit, line bred fish are selectively bred to have certain characteristics that are not found in the natural/wild forms of the species. Basicly mutations or deformities that are visualy apealling to us humans but not really benificial to the fish. Most all fish kept in the cichlid hobby have a simple elegance that nature has provided that is both beautiful and functional. To try and enhance the colors, change fin length, or pattern in many ways fundamentally changes what makes a species what it is .

Line bred...don't need more fish pulled out of rivers/oceans.

Most WC fish are pulled as fry, 1" or so. I voted WC but in 99@ of fish I would take F1"s. Not a big fan of the Line breed.

i perfer wild type fish myself, imo there is no need to mess with nature

It messes with nature more taking them from there natural habitat.

I prefer F1 or F2 fish with provenance to a particular collecting location over either wild fish or fish line bred to accentuate their aesthetics.

The difference between a wild peacock (Aulonocara) and a line bred one can be striking... with the line bred one exhibiting longer fins, more color, etc, etc. I prefer seeing fish as they exist in nature, but can appreciate the perspective that more color = better.

All have a place in the hobby.
