I have a community 20 gallon tank and I was thinking of adding a snail. I live in Florida and this private lake where I go waterskiing has some pretty snails that look similar to japanese trapdoor snails. What risks would I take of adding one to my tank? I have been skiing at this lake for 14 years, it is a very clean, huge, and clear lake with tons of life and no pesticides. Theres never any algea or paracites on the snails I find. Should I take one or not? I need some help from u guys lol im honestly clueless to what I should do.

I had an Apple Snail in my tank that was from my area here in Florida. For many months I was plucking out baby snails from everywhere in my tank and filter long after I got rid of the original snail. Good thing though, my fish enjoyed eating the little ones. I think introducing any wild specimen in your tank is a risk. They could add disease or harmful bacteria to your tank. Just be careful and watch for anything visible on the snails. Maybe you could quarantine them for a while to see how it goes.

Not all nerites can breed in FW but the resulting larva will need phytoplanktons to survive and I doubt the survival rate in established tanks is that high. Try ordering your nerite snails from msjinkzd.

Can you post pics of the local snails you can find in the lake? I'm fascinated to see what snails you get there.:)

Ok ill probally get the snails on wednesday when I go skiing if its not raining lol, from what I remember I think they have a trap door.

Ahh...Interesting! Search Viviparus sp. Are these the ones?
