Will 1/4" of salt water hurt freshwater fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bet it would be OK, but you could always just fill it and drain it again which would dilute any salt even more.

it's fine thers probably less than a gallon of water left it would be so heavily diluted by the other 229 gallons of water it wouldn't make any difference

Why ask though if you weren't willing to change it? I'm not trying to be rude just curious. If you don't properly clean out a saltwater tank prior to freshwater use you run the risk of something bad being carried over that your freshwater fish can't handle.

I ask because if there will be a problem, i can do a larger waterchange. I don't really think much will be carried over, I saw the tank before he tore it down, the tank was beautiful, he keep good care of the tank, its 5 years old and barely has any cratching, the tank had no corals because he had a nano full of them and he just had some saltwater fish. Also i will admit i was tired from having 5 hours of sleep for the past week and that morning i woke up at 7am to get the tank and got home at 5pm with it, and then didn't get it completely finished till 12:30am, so i was tired and not fully thinking, i would have cleaned out algea but there was non in the tank.

Algae can exist without you seeing it very well and algae would be the least of your worries, but hey its your tank just trying to point out some valid points to help you out. Ill butt out. Good luck and post pics when you get it up and running.

im beeting its fine but what i would do is now that the fish in their just do water changes like 40% or more a day maybee even like 70 or 80 right away for a week or so your going to go through alot of primer too it would have been cheeper to clean it with viniger and scrub really well but i think you might be beyond that so good luck

raptor, i greatly appreciate the input, i never thought about sickness, i was just thinking about the salt itself.
ya, i already have did a water change of about 30g (none willingly, hose leaked), I don't have the fish in yet, but i will have fish in there tomorrow, i will throw a test fish in there tonight and see if anything happens. I will do another water change tomorrow and then sunday, if nothing happens to the test fish.
i don't see really any chances of sickness coming over because the tank was very clean and healthy when it was running, the guy loves saltwater, he has a $2000 coral in his nano, I will keep you updated.

I would just say fill it up and do a 50% WC. There can't be that much salt left after that.
