people often recommend based on the largest possible size of a species . you know that fish that outgrows the rest of the brood and gets huge . unless you get that monster alpha male , you're fine in 55 for your average jd .

Agreed, well put

Hopefully you do get a 12" monster, I would gladly buy a 75 or 90 gallon if I had a JD get that big.

Stalke3r…

So you currently have 3 fish in a 10 gal tank (2” Red Devil, 2” Green Terror & 3” Jack Dempsey)…

You want to get them a larger tank now, right? Are you considering getting one 55 gal for all 3 fish? If so this will not work out for very long. The advice you are getting is considering a single JD in a 55 gal by itself for life.

As for breeding the JD & RD together, Hybridization is often looked down upon and passing along hybrid fish is even more often looked down upon. I suggest you read a bit about the pros and cons of doing this before you more forward.

It will likely take a very large tank to allow these three fish to coexist long term.

As for the size of an adult Jack Dempsey, I would suggest 6~9” is typical adult size with males being at the top end of this. Occasionally we do see them get larger but it isn’t common. The reason ‘massive’ Dempseys get bent spine is because they are not kept in large enough tanks. You will see the same feature in most fish that are kept for very long times in too small of a tank.

I see your also from Queens what u got in your tank?
I have 50glns planted tank with Bolivians Rams , Tetras and Corys. With Ph of 6.5.
I am getting a 75 Glns with the intention of putting a JD or a pair of Jd.
Or like you said A jd,convict and a firemouth. That was the reason of my question regarding the sexes of the fishes.
I live in Bayside.

if you put JD convict and Firemouth together than they should all be males so you dont have to worry about breeding aggression

You can put one JD in a 55g and some tank mates
1. Salvani
2. Connvict
3. Firemouth
4. Sengal Bicir for bottom dweller

These would all work but not all of them pick one or two of these choices but I would defentily put a Male JD and Male Salvani in a 55g nice colorations.

Stalk3r...

You have 3 fish now... are you planning to keep them together in the new 55 gal?

YEh i plan on keeping them together until they start showing aggression. Im going to give away two.

You could do a male JD a male Convict and a male Firemouth in a 55 if you wanted.

I attempted that exact stock list but my JD beat on the Con and FM constantly. I got tired of seeing them sit in the upper back corners of the tank and got rid of both. I just have a really aggressive JD.
