I agree that an average jd can stay in a 55 for life, but I'd probably just go with some dithers instead of other cichlids. I'd go with some B.A.T's or giant danios.

yes a 55 is fine. My male grew up in a 155gl and he is only around 9in, I have him and his mate in a 55 now and they are doing fine, so go for it.
