WILL A JAR AND LAOCHES WORK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept a big jar with around 10 clown loaches..a s long as you keep a well furnished tank bottom full of wood and stones and hiding places and all, there will not be a problem..the jar will sometimes want to show who the boss is but without consequence ( assuming, of course, the tank is big )

I agree with Miguel, his plan should work fine. I would keep that Jar well fed though.

i would keep it with some silver dollars or something smaller and silver so the jar might learn to live with them, but would probably attack them before the CL's if it decided to do so. It's probably best not to try it until the jar is 10" or so so that you can see its temperment. I have a 5" jar in w/ a couple fish and it's fine so far, but they're known to start getting aggressive around 8".

It will probably not work out in the long run. When the Jardini is 12" the clown loaches will still be the same size as they are now. Even though the jardini occupies the top portion of the tank they will travel to any and all levels for food.

Ignore what people say and watch the videos in my signature. I've fed my Jardini feeders bigger than my loaches.

My 15" Jardini lives with 8 clown loaches, all of which are small enough to be eaten by the arowana. However, these are some of the ONLY fish I have found in which he will not eat.

I also keep 2 different species of pleco and a 12" fire eel with him, in a 200 gallon tank.

My Jardini is EXTREMELY mean (he even goes after my hand and bites pretty hard)...and the loaches work fine. They even get skittish from me sometimes and hide under the Jardini for protection.

The only suggestions I can make if you're truly concerned are:
1) Get loaches that will not fit in the Jardini's mouth at the time of introduction. Meaning, when you first get all your fish get them about the same size. Even though the loaches grow extremely slowly, I'd bet money on the jardini recognizing them as tankmates through his lifespan.

2) Get as many loaches as you can. Simply put, the more loaches the better. Their natural defense is to swarm and distract the predators with the jumble of stripes (much like zebras). The more you have, the less likely he'll look at one of them as food.

Once again, just refer to my videos. Or, google and find your own. There's many tank vids floating around the net of arowanas with loaches. I only suggest to NOT put the tank in your bedroom like I did. As the arowana thrashing about and loaches' "clicking" wakes me up from time to time. =p

totally agree with the suggestions...^^^

LOL, i don't know why people are so afraid of trying it out (tankmates with Jars) ...i also have 3 CL's with my Jar..the CL's are 3" and my Jar is about 12" with no problems what so ever...not to mention i also have a small 3" indo dat and a 7" RTGG in there with him too...

just b/c some poeple have aggressive Jars and some people heard Jars get aggressive doesnt mean that "ALL" Jars are aggressive..the only way to find out is to try it yourself....i did and i'm loving it and so is my Jar ;)

i had one with my jar and he showed no signs of aggression towards the clown loach. i just recently moved him in with my silver aro.

I just don't think it's worth the risk of losing Clown Loaches until you know the jar's temperment. Personally, I wouldn't put anything in w/ a jar that's small enough to be eaten that you would mind losing. Although, i'm one to talk because I have a black lancer about the same size with mine, but my jar is still in the skittish stage, not the typical aggressive stage. I had it w/ a marbled goby also with no problems, but it's afraid of a tat that's an inch longer. So far, I've had it with quite a few other different fish w/ no problems yet (tetras, barbs, mollies). It probably helps that I've never fed it live, though.

CLs do best in groups of 6 or more

i think if the CLs are big enought and you have loads you maybe ok

they should be allright if they had hiding spots and structure, atm im keeping my 35cm jar with 1 longfin eel(30cm) 2 medium size plecs,2 breedin bristles and 1 15cm bullrout. and when my jar was little he used to chase my plecs around but hes fine now. So i recon you should have no worries, if you grow them up together with loaches around the same size.
