I have a 11"-12" midas that is about 2.5 years old and I saw some three-spotted cichlids (trimac) at petsmart earlier today for under $10. I know they're not the best quality but I don't care, I just want to attempt to breed them. I got my midas at petsmart too.

I am upgrading my midas into a 60gallon (I know, not big enough but he currently resides in a 30gallon which he has lived in his entire life) sometime this weekend and was wondering if I got a 3-4" Trimac and threw him in the new tank around the same time if they would ever have a chance of breeding.

Now come all the sub questions..

Are they even going to get along? Let me note that my midas nips at my hands whenever I put them in his tank and watches me for hours on end waiting to attack me while I do stuff in my room. But he has lived for 2 years with a 7" JD that he just recently beat up on (well I think, he could have just been sick but the midas definitely wasn't helping the situation) and I couldn't heal so had to kill. A 5" JD and two 3-4" convicts. I've never had any problems with him other than that. I separated him from all of my other fish just to be safe but I think he is lonely now. I gave him 2 feeder guppies about a week ago and he hasn't showed interest in attacking them or eating them at all, I can't believe they are still in there..

I need my fish sexed, here are some pictures..

and if I do decide to give it a shot how do I sex a 4" Trimac?

Its a male Midas. Notice the nuchal bump? I would not even dare to house a Trimac and a Red Devil in a 60G. maybe a 150g+, BUT NOTHING LESS. Do you even know the full extent of a Trimac's temperment?

Vent looks like a girl to me oO is girl and oo is a boy.....Nauchal hump ans fin shape mean nothing when talking about RD's....

It's a male. The vent's pretty sharp. And you can't even keep the Midas/RD in that 60 gallon for life, let alone adding a Trimac (which is technically a Flowerhorn since it's from Petsmart). Both are very aggressive fish.

from what I have read it looks like a girl but everybody is saying that the lump on his head and his girth means he is a boy.

I probably shouldn't try mixing him with a Trimac but if they don't get along I can just give the Trimac to my LFS and be out $5.

If they did breed wouldn't I end up with a flowerhorn..? I just want to see what kind of babies I'd end up with.

still wondering.. Like I said before, I know I can dump the trimac off at my LFS if there is a conflict between the two, if not I'm hoping for some interesting/flowerhorn babies. Is this a bad mindset?

Sorry but no....first of all, you would need a much larger tank. The trimac would also need to be as large. Good luck.

I know the tank is small but the midas has been fine in a 30gallon with other fish for almost his entire life, a 60gallon should be like a mansion for him until I can afford a bigger tank.. If i get a small Trimac I will have some good rocks that he can duck and cover from the big guy from.

Hey, I understand you, but sorry...you can try but it probably won't work.

First of all, your midas will establish the 60g as his territory. Any other fish added will be attacked, unless you get a much larger tank. And, a small trimac will be killed quickly, your rd is so large. Sorry to burst your bubble.

he won't even attack the 2" guppies I've had with him in his empty 30g for 4 days now but I don't know how hes going to react to another aggressive fish even if it is small and I give it time to grow up with him. I planned on putting the Trimac in the empty tank before I added the midas (if that would help.) thanks for the advice btw. I'm just weighing my options and thinking, hey its worth a try for a $5 petsmart fish that I can always get rid of. I know a 4" Trimac isn't going to take down my 11"-13" midas.
