will an xp3 do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The XP3 will do fine biologically speaking. Because of it's low flow rate you may find it lacking in mechanical filtration. I would recommend using a couple of AC110's.

It shouldn't just "do" the job it has to be perfect. I have 2 Aquaclear 110s on my 55g, enough filtration for a lightly stocked 220g.

Better to speak from experience, basing advise on manufacturers claims is not valid.

you cant really say low flow rate when its an xp3 on a 67g tank

For mechanical filtration on a 67g tank, 180 gph is a low flow rate. I had a barebottom 55g with a xp3, the stock was very light and the xp3 preformed poorly.

you might have had better success with it with the powerjet nozzle rather than the spraybar. it creates a lot more water pressure and may have helped to circulate debris off the bottom more.

its like a powerhead on the output of the XP.

here is an old pic I took of mine with the water level down:

its like a firehose:

im not trying to argue, im just saying worked for me and has worked for others, its unfortunate yours apparently sucked

The one that was put on the 55g worked no better or no worse then any of the other 7 that I own. It has to do with what the filter is capable of doing.

Just trying to give the OP the best advise possible. As I said before The XP3 will do fine biologically speaking. Because of it's low flow rate you MAY find it lacking in mechanical filtration.

 great for surface aggitation, does nothing to increase the turnover rate. 180gph is 180gph no matter how you spray it around the tank.

I not arguing either. I am surprised you had problems though. I assumed that since it was a barebottom tank you had trouble with lots of debris at the bottom, thats why I had suggested the powerjet to help with the circulation to help prevent this.

Yes you are correct the debris across the bottom was not welll moved. The power would push it father across the tank but more debris would end up on the front and back seems. The spraybar would push the debris evenly across the tank but not as far.

Even if debris got to the intake end of the tank, the intake would only pull debris in if it was within about 4-5" of the intake.

Both the intake and outputs were place at the bottom of the tank..

My opinion is not only bases on this tank. I have a 150g, similar to yours(couple inches shorter though:irked:) The canopy I had on it would not allow for HOBs so I only had a pair of XP3s. Stock was rather heavy and the result was rather poor mech filtration. Took off the canopy and added two AC110s, back to crystal clear water and very few floaties or debries collecting in corners of the tank.

I have since removed the two XP3s from that tank, because of a bio media experiment I'm doing. The tank has yet to show a lack of mech filtration because of this.

I love my XP3s, but they are not capable of doing the job themselves, but team them up with AC110s and you have unbeatable filtration for tanks in the 100-200g range. For tanks under a 100g, well I would just go with the AC110s

I am also trying to give the OP the correct information he is looking for...your saying its not good alone on 100-200 gallons and needs support, that bit doesn't concern the OP he is looking for 67g not 100+, so for under 100 gallons I absolutely believe 1 XP3 is perfect. Sure the OP could throw an XP3 and an AC110 but is it necessary? No. His tank is probably half the length your 150 was/is and therefor the power jet attachment will move the debris up to the intake no problem, he could probably get away with using the spray bar attachment. I used the power jet attachment for my 90 (48'') and it moved the debris up to my intake no problem.
