bellevue, ne
i am just starting in the convict breeding game to hopefully produce a sustainable food source for my clown knife. the tank i just recently baught used came with large volcanic rock (.25"-.5" diameter). my question is will the convicts breed if they cant dig a pit to put their fry in after birth.

Depends on the fish size. A 1" fish would have a hard time but a 4" fish could move the stuff around no problem. Personally, I would go with small gravel.

They will breed regardless of rock size. I have my pair in with rocks larger then my thumbnail it it does not stop em.

Ya they'll breed with the larger gravel, I've had them lay eggs in a bare bottom tank. The problem will be with the fry, the larger gravel makes for larger voids. So it makes it harder for the fry to find food since ti sinks farther into the gravel.

mine put the wrigglers in a hole in the drift wood

So do mine, every time. And when they become free swimming and fall off the wood the parents try desperatly to collect them all and stick them back on it. It's a blast to watch them.

If they do, I want a convict/gravel fry.
