Hi everyone !!! I have recently got a new tank It is 9 foot long by 3 foot deep by 27 inches high around 450 gallons it is 12 mm glass and i have three 8 inch red belly pacu !!! I am just wondering if they will break the glass or silicone when they are fully grown and very large !!! Ive never kept pacu before and don't really know how they will be when they are very large !!! At the mo the chase each other around alot and can be spooked quit easy !!! and this is what scares me cuz i don't know if the glass would take a very large power full fish slamming into it flat out !! and with like 1800 kg of water the glass must be under some strain anyway !!!! if anyone can give me some guidance and info i would be very grateful thank's !!!

I would say no. Large aquariums are manufactured for that in mind. Remember the greatest pressure is coming from the water.

Good luck!

You should be fine. I understand your concern because pacu has a hard head and they do slam into the glass when they get spooked.

Even though they are still quit small when they hit the glass it make's quit a noise !!! im also planning on getting a giraffe cat fish and a pearl arowana !!! is this tank big enough for all when they are fully grown if the filtration is more than what i need ?

i dont know about a giraffe cat but i know somewhat about an aro's size that they need HUGE tanks.. and a tank with fish that get a great deal in size i dont know will do. i think the 450 will be fine for a while with the stock u want+ what you have, but you'll need bigger.

Have any of you even seen a 3+ foot (1 meter)pacu? If you have, you would be singing a very different tune. The power these animals have is ridiculous. The hard heads aren't the problem. They aren't going to swim through the glass. It's when they thrash against the glass and hit it with their side. With their strength, cracking glass isn't that hard. 12mm is a little under half an inch (.47"). For a sheet of glass that is 9'x2.25', thats really not very thick. IMO, pacus should be behind thick acrylic or in a pond. Keeping them in glass (especially a standard tank that isn't extremely overbuilt)is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

Thank's mate !! i don't know what im going to do then ? might get rid when they get to pretty big then but i really like these fish and don't really want to let them go !!! will the tank be ok for fully grown arowana then ? i have no room for a larger tank and i don't have the money to get one made with thicker glass it would cost a bomb !!!!

A full size pacu will go right through 12mm glass or pop a seam if it hits the side hard enough. The 9 foot length of the tank is good, but 3 foot width will be tight for the pacu at full size.

Get rid of the pacus..
An Arowana would be good in there.
You can have a whole bunch of redhook silverdollars.
And a big shoal of Flagtail Prochilodulis...
