Will it bend?

  • Yes, enough to possibly crack your tank.

You do not need a center brace. I have seen 55s, 125s, 180s, and many many 265s that had no center brace and most had tanks underneath or large sumps. I have seen numerous glass tanks be supported only on the four corners and be fine. Stand looks good, and im sure itll work fine.

Thanks guys. These responses range as much as my own thoughts did. If I end up deciding to leave it as is, I had planned to put an unsecured center brace in the front as Burko suggested, but was hoping to get away without it.

I very much do not want to take it apart, as the top is all mitered corners. I would probably end up having to redo the entire top as I would not want to use the same counter sunk holes which are in the optimal spot already, as I think this would compromise the integrity of the joints. This would mean buying, cutting and redoing the wood on top. Since, I think slapping a 2x6 on the front of it would just look totally ugly, and I'm not wanting to rebuild it, I guess center brace it is... Not the worst thing in the world as eventually I could put some doors on it and finish it.

Thanks for your input guys.

I'm confident that it will sag ...but that's just a guess and so is every single reply you received on this thread....find someone with an (structural) engineering background, pass him/her the data (weight of the filled tank, stand components sizing , spans, etc.) and you'll receive an accurate answer.

Ask pharaoh im sure he can give you the correct answer,me personally,i think it will be fine.

You're fine. It can sag all it wants. The tank is supported at the corners. My 125g is 4x4 vertical posts at the corners and nothing in the middle except 2x4's running around the tank, but they bow down away from the tank between the posts. Tank is perfectly level and all is well.

Look like you have mad skill bro.I think I would have double up 2x6s thew or you could put a piece of 3'' angle iron on the back side of the front support that would hold for sure. You are probably ok but to be safe I would. You have a lot to lose if it fails

BRO ??!!!!
are you a man now w.w. ?

Hmmm... 3" angle iron. I'm liking that idea. In fact, we used that for one of our tanks before and it worked well. I totally forgot about that. I'm going to run over to Lowe's and check it out. And yes, I have WAY to much to lose if it fails. However, no "bro" here. I'm a chick with a chop saw, drill, a table saw, etc. Now if I can only get them to make those things in pink while still keeping them good quality....;)
