Someone donated an alligator gar, we had it in a small pond. Someone bought it today and put it in a 55. Fish was 13" or so. I warned against it. It was not my sale, so I couldn't do anything about it.

Another customer brought back an African Cichlid today. And I quote: "All of my other fish are fine. It wouldn't eat and I know there was aggression but it's got ick and my water is perfect. Your water has diseases."

He got nothing. GTFO, D-bag. I can't even imagine how many fish are sent to their doom in the hands of these people. Job is not as rewarding as I thought. At least I am learning things, but the things I already knew such as the general public being morons are really starting to get to me.

A funny LFS story. I watched a lady with her young son, looking at quarter-sized piranhas. She bought a goldfish for a quarter to be fed to them. Im not sure what she was expecting, but when they first dropped it in, she squealed excitedly, "Oh look, there it goes. Do you see it honey?" Then as they started taking pin-sized bites out of it and it dissolved in a cloud of spinning gold scales and blood, she said, "Oh, oh, oh mommy feels bad." I bet she wasnt expecting her son to get that kind of nature lesson.

Keep the faith EW That's the nature of retail. NO LFS...car dealership...parts store...Nursery...home improvement store (the list is endless) could keep their doors open if they always did the responsable thing. No ones ever going to change because someones yelling at them and telling them how wrong they are...just grin and bear it...Lead by example...take it all in stride...and drink LOTS of beer...

Welcome to the club.

Working at a LFS...you deal with a alot of retards and weirdos.

I used to work @ a porn store and the same thing can be said. Who thought working a DVD player could be so hard for the mass population...guess they weren't thinking with their brain:ROFL:

You wouldn't have a job if no fish dies and people don't come back for more/replacement. And don't expect all fish to live and people come back to get bigger tanks.

Fish keeping is a trial and error hobby for all people. They will kill enough fish to the point of either giving up the hobby completely or finally learning how to keep them alive and well for life. But it's between the either/or that alot of fish will sacrifice, and where the money goes into your pocket.

C'est la vie - such is life. I'm with Scorponok, it's the nature of the business and the reason after two summers I quit. All you can do in good conscience is warn people that an arowana will not grow to the size of a tank. It's still about the sale though, so, if they insist on the purchase even after fair warning sell it to them, their stupid money pays for your hours. If you still don't feel right quit like I did and make some REAL money doing something else, then save as many fish as you can!

I still remember those days where people stared wide-eyed at you as you told them a 55 is a SMALL tank for the fish that they are buying. Or some really annoying woman that I sold an arowana to came back the next day to return it because of torn fins. One of the more memorable experiences some woman got upset after she asked me, "what filter pad do I need for my 20 gallon tank?" :screwy: She actually got upset at me after I asked if she wanted to look at the filters we carried to identify it she said, "why do you fricken people always do this? I just want to know what fricken pad goes for my 20 gallon tank." You know what I did? I punched her in her mouth and she flew through our 125 gallon display tank.

Yeah.

We had a lady walk up with a bag of bird food and said "I would like to buy these for your birds"

I looked at her and was like what?

She told me "you guys dont have any food in the bird bowls, and they are picking around looking for food, so if your not going to take care of them i will"

We was like..uhh lady..we feed them every morning, and every night before we close...

She said "Well the bowl is empty...you cant feed a bird when its empty"

I told her "Its 4:00pm..."

Then she just stood there...

God do i hate weird people like that..

And the biggest argument i got into..was with a saltwater guy about a canopy.

I dont know what it is with saltwater people...but they act like they are better then everyone because their tank is worth 4gs...kinda like the asshats that drives around in BMWs and ect...

But anyways...this guy walks in demanding me to special order him a canopy when i was talking to another customer.
Now i dont work well with people just demanding me...atleast say "excuse me" or somthing.

Then the guy i was helping was nice, and told me to go help him.

I kept my cool, and asked him what size and color.

Then he said 48".

Then i pointed to one, and said like that one?

He yelled out, why the hell in the world would i buy a wooden canopy for a saltwater tank?! I have a saltwater tank, and i cant use a wooden canopy, you dont know what your doing.

Now he just said that to me being a freshwater specialist at the store. I told him we only cary WOODEN canopy, why would you want a canopy over a saltwater tank anyways?

Then he got mad, and said do you think im stupid enough to put a wooden canopy over my big expensive tank? Then i asked him what size, he said 48".

I said sir...a 50g, 55gal, 75ga, and 90gals are in 48" wide, i need to know the other measurments.

Then he shuted up and walked out...

Worst customer i ever delt with.

Ever since working at my store...i never knew working at a petstore would have so much drama...

God im so happy my main career is pointed towards motorsports..
