You can't cure ignorance, don't try.
Just shake your head, nod, and smile.. If they come back 'seeking' information, then help them. If they come back 'making accusations' prove to them they are wrong.
I don't waste my time at work with idiots, or I'd never get anything done. If the idiot comes back with dead fish, I let him know what an idiot he is. If he accepts that he is an idiot and wants to learn, I help him.. If he keeps acting like an idiot, I subtly let him know he will always be an idiot and his fish will continue to die.

No way you didnt?!?!?!?!CaranxIgnobilis;848664; said:C'est la vie - such is life. I'm with Scorponok, it's the nature of the business and the reason after two summers I quit. All you can do in good conscience is warn people that an arowana will not grow to the size of a tank. It's still about the sale though, so, if they insist on the purchase even after fair warning sell it to them, their stupid money pays for your hours. If you still don't feel right quit like I did and make some REAL money doing something else, then save as many fish as you can!
I still remember those days where people stared wide-eyed at you as you told them a 55 is a SMALL tank for the fish that they are buying. Or some really annoying woman that I sold an arowana to came back the next day to return it because of torn fins. One of the more memorable experiences some woman got upset after she asked me, "what filter pad do I need for my 20 gallon tank?"She actually got upset at me after I asked if she wanted to look at the filters we carried to identify it she said, "why do you fricken people always do this? I just want to know what fricken pad goes for my 20 gallon tank." You know what I did? I punched her in her mouth and she flew through our 125 gallon display tank.
That is so far beyond true its not even funny lolHPIZZLE;2010322;2010322 said:its like ron white says "you cant fix stupid"

And last night some people came in and had dead angelfish. I asked what else they had, they said 2 needlefish, 3 irredescent sharks, 3 silvertip sharks, and 10 tiger bars,...IN A 29G!!! i was like well thats why you keep losing angelfish, to much movement and too many fish, asked when they did a water change said never in the 2 YEARS it has been setup, they just add when it gets low!!! I said well you do understand everything but the barbs will get atleast a foot, with the silvertips needing brackish water and eventually marine. They say, well we want to return the angels and get a blackghost knife and 2 pictus cats!! i said we can return these fish to you for store credit but i will need a water sample and personally i feel your tank is over crowded anyway and doesnt need more fish. They say well excuses us but sorry if we dont like our tanks looking like CRAP like you do then. Then i gave them there money back and said im sorry but i will have to ask you to leave the store now, we do not tolerate employee harassement like that. They left and that was that. Then i went to the girl who sold them the fish and ask why, and she said because they didnt care what i thought and ignored what i said so i just got them the fish so they would leave. I was like did you just see how i did that, DO THAT NEXT TIME so we dont have to keep replacing there dead, expensive fish, dang 14 day guarantee. Then she was like i dont think thats very smart because people will go to a LFS or petco. I was like really they will go to the LFS and pay $7 for a tiger barb half our size, or to petco and pay the same price for a fish covered in ick? She then said there just fish who cares, and i said apparently not you, so go clean out your locker, get your stuff, and go clock out, you know longer work for PetSMART.
My store has a rep for being very knowledgable about fish and reptile, mainly because i push those, and i didnt want someone who just needed a job to be working here. MAN I CANT WAIT TILL I GET OUT OF COLLEGE AND OPEN MY OWN FISH STORE!!!
Your kidding right? right? Thats like saying I get scared if I see too many ponds, tanks, women, and the list goes on....Albel;1928208; said:I entirely agree, I keep mine in a 15g and he takes up the entire tank all the time! But you have to compromise with these people... cause when even "upgrading" from a 1g to a 2g is a huge deal to them, trying to convince them 5g is the bare minimum just results with them looking at you like your some sort of totally INSANE person!....
Seriously dude... they even convince themselves all the time by telling each other things like "I put my betta from his 1g to a brand new 3g... but he was totally FREAKING out cause he never had SO MUCH space, so I put him back in his 1g and now he is calm and happy again". I mean REALLY, this is the kind of crap they COMMONLY feed each other with!
.... and hear this, after a while, the same guy posted again saying something like "well I tried it again and I think I might have mistaken curiosity with "freaking out" after all, I think he was just excited... but I'm not taking any chances..."
There is soo much emphasis that "the fish gets scared if he sees too mcuh water"...
he said everything but the barbs.... you missed a wordsteverothery;2011347;2011347 said:Er, tiger barbs don't grow a foot, but yes, get the idea.
