Welcome to the world of retail my friend!

I work for a major aquarium products manufacturer. I've heard some stories that I find to be unreal, but one I heard this past year takes the cake. It is however ignorance/greed coming from the other direction. An account of mine happened to be in another store checking things out. He noticed an older woman who wanted to purchase fish for her dying husbands tank. In the tank were his beloved goldfish. She picked out some animals that she wanted for the tank, but told the worker that if they were going to harm her husbands precious fish that it wouldn't work. The store employee assured her that all would be fine. My customer, taking note of this thought something major was wrong as she was in the marine section of the store. When he confronted the employee to tell him that these marine fish (not brackish) would die within minutes in her tank, he went and got the store owner. The owner, like the employee assured the old lady that all would be fine. My customer flipped and asked how he could do such a thing. He was told to leave or he would deal with the police. I guess it's true that these fish certainly weren't going to have a chance to harm her husband's precious fish!

I don't know what bothers me more, ignorance or greed!

I would say both are equally apalling

long time lurker, first time poster here. i work at an lfs here in south carolina.

today a guy called us saying he was taking his tank down and he wanted to trade in his live rock. i told him if it was quality we would work with him. he shows up at closing time with three igloo coolers loaded with rocks that had clearly just been taken from somebody's seawall. when we told him we wouldnt take it, he and his construction worker buddies threw a ****fit and left. obviously they were working somewhere on the coast and someone's dim lightbulb went off thinking they could snow us over with 200 lbs of local rubble. unbelievable but true.

ive also had, A) a woman call and ask how to know if her fish was still alive? B) A guy on Christmas eve who bought a set up at wal mart, put aquarium salt in it, and wanted a nemo to go with the neon tetras and swordtail he already purchased there. when i told him what he had done, he was devastated and said his kids christmas was ruined, why didnt anyone tell him? WELL SIR, YOU WENT TO WALMART AND YOU DID ZERO RESEARCH!!!!! end rant.

This is how I view all of these customers....

I could never work at my lfs. I've stopped so many people from doing the wrong thing that a)the manager hates me and if I worked there b) I'd end up smacking someone. I can't tolerate arrogant stupidity.:irked: Ignorance that is innocent can be changed with knowledge, when it's ignorance mixed with arrogance, knowledge is useless. I've heard more people say 'fish grow to the size of their tank' in that store than anything else. I've seen a guy purchase $200 worth of salt water fish, coral, and anemonies (mixing species of anemonies at that) and when he was asked what size tank and how long it's been set up, his reply was "it's a 30gal and I've had it set up for a few days".:screwy: When the guys told him that everything he bought was going to die (especially since they were hard corals and all he had was a freshwater flourescent), his reply was "I've been doing this for years kid, and how much experience do you have?" All I could do was laugh and walk away. :footinmou

LOL love these stupid F###s

I cannot believe some of the stories here! I mean, yes, I can but its more of like that...how in the heck can ppl be that stupid? So far I have only had one experience that I raised my eyebrow to. I went to one of the LFS here, and I asked if they had any dwarf puffers...and the lady said "no I don't have any brackish tanks set up". Aumm...dwarf puffers are fresh water...now the Green spotted puffer is brackish..and I clearly said dwarf puffers. You would think a store should know what type of water to put their fish in....

I worked at a LFS back in the mid-late 1980's whilst at School. We had 2 Wels catfish in stock (I took one) & a customer took the other. I warned him about the obvious but he wanted it...came back 3 weeks later complaining it had decimated ( and I mean decimated) his entire pond full of goldfish.

C'est la vie - such is life. I'm with Scorponok, it's the nature of the business and the reason after two summers I quit. All you can do in good conscience is warn people that an arowana will not grow to the size of a tank. It's still about the sale though, so, if they insist on the purchase even after fair warning sell it to them, their stupid money pays for your hours. If you still don't feel right quit like I did and make some REAL money doing something else, then save as many fish as you can!

I still remember those days where people stared wide-eyed at you as you told them a 55 is a SMALL tank for the fish that they are buying. Or some really annoying woman that I sold an arowana to came back the next day to return it because of torn fins. One of the more memorable experiences some woman got upset after she asked me, "what filter pad do I need for my 20 gallon tank?" :screwy: She actually got upset at me after I asked if she wanted to look at the filters we carried to identify it she said, "why do you fricken people always do this? I just want to know what fricken pad goes for my 20 gallon tank." You know what I did? I punched her in her mouth and she flew through our 125 gallon display tank.

did you still have your job after you made bail or were there no actions taking against you by the authorities, after you " punced her in the mouth " and sent her flying through a 125 gallon display tank

These are all arguements for eugenics
