i can see a whole lot of irony im most of you as you curse those who dwell in there own arrogance and pride when it comes to buying fish in this hobby.

yet, though you may know more than most other people. You take pride in it. I bet if i was to watch any of you go into a different store with a whole different subject you knew nothing or little about or i should say "think you know" (just as these cusomers you deal with are that way), be it cars, diving, sports, stamp collecting, landscaping, building, computers, and what not along with other misellaneous hobbys and subjects you would more than likely be offended in the same way that they are, or, you would be doing something labeled as "stupidity or lack of common sense" in there eyes because your common sense isnt the same as theirs. The same people you mock and curse, curse you in things you know little about in other areas. And in return, you get the very same critisism that most of you are posting.

See, I may be weird, but if I don't know, I ask questions from someone who does, or I look it up. I also wouldn't hire someone and put them in a department where they have NO experience. That's the problem. These fish stores get these people that know NOTHING except you have to condition the water for the fish to live (some don't even know that). These people go in and think that because they work there, they know what they're talking about and that's how they get most of their false information. So of course they think they're right, the person that works in that department told them so. The problem lies within the store.

Oh but also, in cars, diving, sports, stamp collecting, landscaping, computers, and miscellaneous others, you're not dealing with LIVE ANIMALS............

a guy and his son came into the lfs i used to work at. They really had their eyes on a 3 inch all black oscar we had for sale. So i was talking to the guy and he seemed knowledgeable, so i got the net and caught the oscar and was begining to bag it for him. Right about the time i was tieing the top of the bag he asked me if he can put the oscar in a 2 1/2 gallon filtered betta tank.. I almost dropped the bag i was so shocked when he said it, then i stated to laugh so hard inside explaining to the guy how much of a bad idea this was and howi wouldn't put my betta in a 2 1/2 gallon tank let alone a oscar, but he kept insisting he was going to buy a bigger tank in 3 weeks. The guy got furious when i told him i can not sell him this fish and then demanded to speak to my manager. My manager began to argue with him about how big a oscar gets and how it would never last in a 2 1/2 gallon tank for more than a week. We told him unless he purchaces a bigger tank we can not sell him this fish, but he kept saying we are just trying to scam him into buying a bigger tank. The guy said he will never come back to our store again and said he would just go to walmart and buy one there for his son.

Sure, we ask questions from people who know better than we know... but since we don't know well, we don't choose our mentor well. I worked in a fish store for a couple of years when I was a youth. I learned a lot from the owner, and here I am years later getting back in to the hobby. All the crap I learned from the owner of that fish store (who kept fish for decades successfully and had a great store) was wrong. Dead wrong. Sure it kinda worked (sorta), but it was still wrong. People still jump on MFK and give crap answers and spread disinformation. We know, we think we know... they know, they think they know. We are them, and they are us.

BUT - there are STUPID people out there who neither know, nor wish to know. As a further bonus, they often breed.

Have you ever walked through a mall, a store, or down the street, saw a couple or talked to a couple, and inside your head you say "My God, I hope they don't have children"?

This is my first post...YEY. I have worked in Pet stores for the past seven years (in school) and I can totally relate with your posts. One of the best stories I have is that two Christmas seasons ago, I had a Russian man come up to me with child and fish bowl in tow. He pointed at a Clown Fish and demanded "we want Nemo" shaking the fish bowl in my face. I looked at the bowl and the man and asked, "is that where Nemo is going to go?" He said yes, and proceeded to point out the specific Nemo he wanted. Again, trying to explain to a moron that Nemo just can't go into a fish bowl, he also got very angry. We settled on a Nemoesque Betta instead. haha I love people.....

A lady came in with an octopus. She wanted to trade it in. Not something our customers really covet, but we will make an offer on most things. We sell them for $80, and offer 1/3 of what we sell them for. She called me a "clown" and stormed out. Why does everyone think they have the rarest thing on the planet when they bring it into the store?
