Will my Gar eat Pallets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is not recomended to starve such a young gar. I would wait just start offering pellets in addition to what you are already feeding. Should switch pretty easily. Remember to remove any uneaten food so as not to foul the water.

x2.

Also, adding some freeze-dried krill to the mix might help to entice them to eat floating foods such as pellets.

definitely agree. i have converted some big (and particularly stubborn) wild spotted gars (24"+) to non-live feed using FD krill. that stuff works wonders and is a great conversion food for gars--

I actually learned that trick from you.

i have mine even eating vegggie wafers

Excellent. It's a good idea to give them those every now & then for supplementation purposes.

Got mine to eventually accept floating sticks by first getting it to eat the freeze dried krill as well. Then it's much easier to wean them off of the krill and onto sticks.
Good luck with it!

Great to see someone put their foot down on starvation techniques!... if you toss the food to the gar or feed from tongs?... just mix in a few pellets. so it's all getting tossed together... the "juices" from the other foods should imo be enough to ellict a feeding response. My guys all took pellets when they where ready, and never looked back. My Cuban checks out new pellets... but will usually give them a try at least once, not picky.. but smart. my floridas are abit more picky.. and as suggested Krill is great, but ime expensive, so pre-soaking the pellets in chicken juice or shrimp, or whatever your offering first may do the trick. I've heard Gators aren't finicky fish.. just keep offering and i'm sure soon they'll gobble anything you offer down. they may spit them out at first because of the texture but don't get disuaded, keep offering. my gar will take sinking,floating.. you name it pellets. if they are use to eating off the bottom, try sinking. if off the top try floating.

Starving is fine a lot of fish can go months and week without food.. I had to starve my arowana for almost a month for him to get on pellets now he takes watevr pellets I drop in there I'm sure ur gar can go somtime on a starve..

never mind

Best is get your gar on pellets while he's still small. I lucked out with my Florida as he took pellets the 1st day I got him and now he eats Hikari floating sticks/sinking carnivore and NLS pellets.. Use floating pellets as gars are mostly near the surface also it would be easier for your gar to find the pellet. Anyhow good luck with the starvation method.
