Will my spotted gar be ok?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that should be fine. get a low profile sponge filter. then fill it up to just above the gars back. just enought to make sure it is not exposed. just make sure it is above the sponge filter by about an inch. if that means it is a few inches above the gar then that is what it is. that would be the only way to filter it with out trying to make a sump system with an ajustable overflow tube. if you hae a spare sump or even on top of your current disply. drill into the side neer the bottom of the tank you get. then on the other side of the bulkhead place a pvc 90 going into a streight pipe. cut that pipe to the hight to give you the right depth for the gar to be covered. then on the other side have it drain into your main tank. use a powerhead or a low flow pump to pump from the main tank into the temp gar er. those are the simplest ways to get what you need. the problem with the sponge is new it will not be cycled, the above tank overflow system will allow the gar to remain in the system.

Put him in a floating tray at the top of the tank. Lots of ways to do that-get creative. No need for a seperate system etc. Add Salt!! 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons-it relaxes fish and helps with healing.

Just make one- tie some styrofoam to a piece of egg crate and it will float. You can make anything float with a little styro. It will keep your gar at the top of the tank where it can bob it's head up and grab a breath of air. Egg crate will allow the water to flow through and around the gar- Just zip tie the eggcrate to the stryofoam.

Well I put this together last night. If this technique doesn’t work I will try the floating crate. You guys think this should work? Plenty of aeration and he can pick his head up to get air.

That is awesome! Brilliant effort, I really hope he pulls through for you, it's so good to see someone putting so much effort into helping their fish. Kudos :)

already a great achievement going to the length you have gone to... glad to see the extent and preservation of other fish keepers.
hope all goes well. i have had my spotted for over a year now and is by far my favorite fish. i hope everything pulls through.

to add to all of this...
everyone is aware of the tactics that can be implemented pertaining towards gars running into the side of tanks (decor, solid background, etc)
any suggestions as to what could be done for the tops of the tanks?

-what did you have on top? acrylic/plexi glass/glass?
-was the water level at maximum capacity or if there was a gap, how many inches of air space? (sorry if you have posted the answer previously)

having vegetation is a possibility that might help these situations (floating plants, etc) yet might be difficult for a lot of tanks on the surface or in between the water level and lid in some cases. it might take away from your costly and nicely lit lighting system, may create more of a mess than anything, etc.

padding the underlayer of your plexiglass may be difficult as it may soak of moisture, but even a half inch of felt/foam might be the fine line of a broken back or a slight spook.

any other ideas?
