Has there been any changes as far as how he acts?

judging by what we have seen and read, it seems so. the "sinking", not moving, not eating. really sad for such a nice fish. really would be nice for him to pull through giving all the care that is being done for him.

Thanks everyone I am really hoping he pulls through. The contraption keeps him from flipping over but I can tell he gets a little frustrated being constricted. He can reach up for air which is awesome and I have seen movement past his neck including his tail and fins which could mean he is not paralyzed and feeling better. My only worry is his swim bladder but wouldnt that have been ruined from the initial hit? The 2 days of being normal after the hit throws me off. I think this is his best way of recovery though. Only time will tell now.

As to the top of my tank, he smashed into a piece of acrylic. Borderline my fault because I tried not feeding my peacock bass cause they are hogs (bad idea). Decided to feed my gar a big piece of tilapia with my tongs and when he took it my bass chased him all around because it was hanging out his mouth. They just scared the crap outta him which caused him to go vertical and smash his face. I always felt bad because I always have to stuff my bass before my gar even had a chance to eat which I hate doing because it is unnecessary to fill them up so much. In the future, i will either have to feed much smaller pieces so my bass have nothing to go after or just stuff my bass first everytime. Lesson learned!

the problem when bass and gar cohab. i feed my bass from a different section of the tank. mainly for the bass' protection but also to prevent a gar related feeding issue.

hopfully it pulls through.

Looks like something I'de rig up, don't forget with the limited water volume doing 25% water changes or so daily imo is best particularly if the filter you rigged up isn't already cycled. clean water will only help. glad he seems to be doing better, I would wait to try and feed him until he's doing "ok" and offer him food favorites. with the aeration i would be wary of haveing bubbles going directly against him, a strong current is great but i would avoid actual airbubbles in his "enclosure"

imho lesson learned why the skickys says bass, and cichlids ect make bad tank-mates for gar. spooks happen.. but increase with active fish, and you don't get much more active then cichla and cichlids. food for thought.

I have floating plants in my gar tanks, and driftwood. helps imo alot to keep them in touch with the surface ect.. but spooking happens.. even padding the top ect isn't going to prevent injuries. the surface plants, and driftwood may also grant them a measure of "protection" and prevent spooks in this manner.. but its all only speculation. gars just jump... a well tended tank, with a "secure" feeling will only decrease jumps, ie safe decor/boundries, calm tank-mates, regular lighting ( i've found with my tanks on timers with more "jumpy fish" overall are more calm) water quality maintained lends itself to fewer "accidents" over-all.

3/4 of the fish I own are "spooky" or "jumpers" and i've found a secure feeling fish, no matter how i have to acheive it is a fish thats not going to jump. I've lost my fair share along the way learning this.

Sorry guys for the delay on the status, he was in the quarantine bin for about 4 days and showed zero improvement. Actually worse, his colors started fading more and would roll right over when taken out of the braces. I decided to put him back in the big tank seeing what would happen and he didn’t get any better. His back had seemed to scrunch up and took on the shape of a half circle almost. I decided to use clove oil and put him down peacefully. He fell asleep and off he went. Sad to see him go but at least he had a good change to survive. Thanks for all the help guys, I truly feel like he could have been saved if the injury wasn’t as severe. Maybe a new Gar in the future but not right now! Thanks again everyone!
