Will NTT's get more rare than IT's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IT are in abundance here in singapore. some are very puny just about 1 inch. i heard the indos are breeding them, but its a trade secret. however, heard from my regular LFS that the stocks are irregular. for example he ordered 10, the suppliers can only supply 6 or something.

Do you know what the laws are like for importing fish into Sing? Is there a lot of corruption or is it very strict?

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
As you may have read from CChassis's thread, the sellors in Thailand are suggesting the small baby indos are "un-natural" / Farmbred. Clearly not the same as Indo, if what you say is true.....

Interesting, as thre are 1000's in the US states, (this is what some members have posted recently.) I presume you are located in the US.

F33, if its not too much trouble, can you ask the guys at your LFS about this list you saw? see what they say? Ask if the Indos are banned from export from Indo, Thailand or from all pacific rim countires.

^ I think you might be mistaken or the list is incorrect. STs are definitely banned for export from Thailand and have been for a long time. NTTs i'm not so sure about but looking at the lack of them compared to ITs here it would not surprise me if they too had been added to the list.

that's really inteesting, I think most people who are writing on these type of threads are just looking for answers and are genuinely interested. Can you tell us more regrading the capture process of tiny indos? how do they pull so many, small ITs out of the water with out destroying other species numbers, or the mature Dat numbers.
The fish i saw here were 2cm long. how long do you think they were hatched?

I am aware of smuggling here, just yesterday a load of rare corral was ceased at the main airport which came from Indonesia, but I'm still surprised how so many can be brought in though the back door and then sold so cheaply, even cheap enough for export.

Here is what i know:

Until now, there is no known parameter for captive breeding. Our government body has started the research for captive breed but the progress is slow. Could be will take long time for a success. It took about 11 years for our researcher to breed clown loach in captivity and I believe it will even take longer to breed indo datz. And with those long periods, you can imagine the impact of deforestation and pollution in our rivers.

As I said, current year IT season has brought many small IT, 3/4 inch to 2 1/4 inch. These IT quantities are exceeding most people expectation from most fish player as based on prior years, the quantity was just enough to cover export demand in several countries. I hear that a major fish exporter increased their buying price above the average buying price from fishermen cause they expect the quantity will not so abundant and the season is short. But later on, when all fishermen sell to them because of high price, the season continues and fishermen keep on coming to sell their fish. Up to now, I heard there are about almost half million of baby ITs in their stock while in the other hand, market demand has stopped due to over stock. So i believe you can find baby IT easily rite now compared to previous years back. So collect as many as you can, cause i believe next seasons will not be as much as today :naughty:

with half of million of babies IT and slow sales, I guess it will cost them much to feed em :screwy::WHOA::grinno::grinno:

What fishermen due to catch them is as simply as catching clown loach:D

^ that's believable. I written it else where but scientists here in Thailand have been able to breed STs in captivity, but with a very low success rate. I'm pretty sure once any government sponsored program in The ASEAN works it out, information will be shared. I'm still going to look around here in Thailand because even the staff at the Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsat University, told me ITs are farm bred here in Thailand and breed easier than STs.
They also told me (and showed me), legislation for the import of wild caught fish. Basically several species of carp were brought here from China a long time ago. They have had a massive impact on local species.
Even though corruption and smuggling are rampant here fish like ITs, (because of their similarity to STs and similar habitat) are on watch lists.

Excuse my ignorance but i don't know how they catch clown loaches either, can you describe how they're caught?

From what i can gather.. only small NTTs are currently available in the Malaysian Market. Indo tigers are spoken of as readily available in the near future. My guesstimates are that Indos are currently still more available.

So, from reading here, IT are not farmbred "successfully" in Indonesia, but they are in Thailand.

We all agree now that there are many more baby Indos this season than there have been in many years. So IT's are either breeding like crazy in wild this year, compared to previous years, or, thai-farmbred ITs have significantly boosted the quantity, or a combo of both.

Does anybody know if a quota limit was placed on ITT and NTT in the last 3-4 years?
(which could explain the sudden extra quants if the quota had been lifted this year)
