Will overstocking your fish tank stunt fish growth?

the right food and keeping the growth hormon down or out of the water will keep your fish growing strong and fast. You can have poor water quality as long as the growth hormon is low in the water the fish will still grow it's not ammonia of nitraites that stunt the growth so much. But ammonia and nitrites cause stress and we all know stress can effect the body in many ways. But in order to keep the hormon levels down you need to do more wc and more wc means better water quality.

The batch of Cory fry were I did daily large water changes some times twice a day these fish grow faster and larger then the second batch where I had more fry and was not as good with wc. At 3 weeks the second batch was smaller the my first batch at 3 weeks. These fry were all from the same parents and both fed first bites and brine shrimp.

Yes I agree the right diet also plays a big part is growth for dogs, babies and yes fish.
i think he knows that it does, i think he was just wondering if there were any actual case studies or controlled scientific experiments where they tested this, i agree with what you said but i also would be interested in seeing if there was an actual experiment where they measured in a quantitative way what the changes in a fish's development were

Scientificly you are wrong.

even if it was a 5gallon tank versus a 20000gallong the growth would remain exactly the same if the water parameters are both spot on. if the water quality is better in the 5gallon, it will grow faster and larger in the 5gallon.

Please list the study where you found this. "Scientificly" this is a hypothesis without the backing of research and experimentation.

All things being equal, I would still disagree with this hypothesis. The ability to swim freely is a variable you can't control in this case.

Overstocking makes maintaining water quality difficult. Poor water conditions are one of the three main reason fish are stunted, but it is possible to provide proper water conditions.

What you CANNOT avoid are high levels of stress in overcrowded tanks. Stress results in a host of issues, including the susceptibility to disease.

(By the way, stunt-reason-#3 is nutrition, but that's not much of a problem anymore with modern fish foods.)

Care to share how you come up with that kind of thought? Is it from an actual study, or is it what you think?

Can you point me to a reference?

Now that's a more controlled experiment :) But slow growth and stunt are not necessarily the same thing though...

Interesting read. The conclusion is that "Group size did not significantly affect growth rate in either Common Goldfish or Black Widow Tetras when housed in groups of up to 12 (Goldfish) or 16 (Black Widow Tetras) individuals in a 50-L tank. Individual housing did not appear to impact the growth patterns of the Common Goldfish or the Black Widow Tetra."

True slow growth and stunted are not the same but there is something to say about more wc being helpful in the growth of fish.

As for stress we know that this can cause our bodys to become weak. Stress can be due to so many things.

It's hard to find info about stress in fish BUT I found this about kids.

if stress can effect us in this way it can effect other animals the same way or simmular.
