will this heat my room cheaper

I wouldn't want to use those oil heaters, theres no fan force behind them so you will just end up with a bunch of thermal layers.

That other unit linked drawing 1200W seems ok its still a fair bit of draw.

I would be looking for a decent heat pump, I dont know why people keep suggesting other sources of heat, A heat pump will beat most other sources in terms of efficiency and upfront cost (similar sized units ) + its fan forced so you will get a better result vs heat just being dropped in one area then raising right to the ceiling. This is all quite a waste though without adequate insulation imo. I am not saying other methods wont work I just dont really see the point looking into them when they all pretty much use more power and put out less heat the only positive I see is some of the small units have a much lower price tag. This method is also pretty simple once its installed just turn it on set the temp you want and when that temp is reached the unit will cycle off and on when required.

how much will this heat pump cost, is something you install yourself, or somthing you plug up, you mentioned it before in one of my threads but when I think of heat pump I think of what heats your water up while shower/dishes.
what is intual price of setting this up and in your massive fish room thread,what page do you start talking about heating, I have read a good 40 pages back when I first joined but that has been a while :)
 
I have been thinking about heating my basement with some kind of energy efficient system.Ive thought about a pellet or wood stove as has been suggested here.I have never heard of this heat pump but it sounds interesting.I googled the term and they seem to work like a central air cooling unit but in reverse.
 
i have been researching, havnt seen a price for setup and monthly bill, I mean what around it would cost for sq ft of room
 
Here is what I run in my 2 car garage. This is one of the main reasons why I was able to run 500 watt heater and have it maintain just about any temp I wanted in a 800+ gallon system.

For your situation I would go WAY smaller.

Check that site out if you want to go electric as there are a ton of different heaters. I purchased mine through McMaster-Carr the same place several memebers by their filter socks from. I work down the street from them.

have not heard the oil radiator heaters you plug into the wall being a fire hazard

not sure I agree with the thermal layer thing, ceiling mounted heater is going to go by the heat at the ceiling ware it will be warmer as heat rises. tho you can place the thermostat lower.

a radiator type heater will click on when the temp drops at 2' about off floor level, the heat will rise up and draw colder air off the floor tell temp is reached at floor level. once room is sustained at temp all in all will keep the room as a hole at temp you want. I have been using them for many years, never had a issue.

I have the thermostat right down on the floor level, my unit cycles the air ( flip thing moves up and down fan forced) you can feel it drag the warm air down and so on. I think this is much better then the radiator heaters its faster and more even but thats just imo. if you added a fan with radiators it would work much better but again just me.

mopani - A heat pump is just what is used in a reverse cycle unit, those big wall mounted aircon / heater units with the sep box which normal sits outside containing the heat pump, all the big brands make them and you should be able to buy them at any white goods store in the states, price depends, I know here the smaller units are going for around 500-600$ else you get a really no brand one for around 200-400$ then the larger units go up to around 10k being in the states you should be able to get a large unit much cheaper everything costs 3x more here >_<

You cant install a R/C unit else your quite the handy man but I still would not do it, they need to be connected to the mains power so you will have to understand that and you also need to connect copper piping etc which didn't seem to hard but you need on of those copper pipe increasing tools ($$$) I paid 220$ for a sparky and plumber to both come at the same time and install the unit for me with 4m of copper piping, they normally try to use much less but I had no space.

I paid under 1000$ for my unit installed, and to be frank I actually almost spent the same amount of money buying 300W heaters for all the tanks lol! Now I am heating my fishroom + ext off the same unit (mind you only draws 700W small unit) and all my fish are fine, I still give flowerhorns heaters as I like to keep them at 30 but they are hardly on, my tanks over 300G are all heated for free pretty much off that heat pump, I still do plan to run copper lines though just to bump it up, for instance if I set my unit to 30C which it normally is on as I hate to cold also my tanks sit around 24-27c depending where they are located etc.

I did not really discuss my heating on MFK, I spoke to a few friends and buddies from work, Its a deep subject if you want to understand it in depth, I spent weeks talking and talking wasting money on beer to get them talking too and its still not the best in my brain but the options are endless and every method has its weak points the heat pump was just best for me but I do believe for most fishrooms it would be a much better option, If I could do it again hydronic floor heating connected to a solar powered hot water system coiled into a central sump :D
 
thanks squirtle, so dang much to mull over. what does your monthl power bill run on your fish room with the eat pump
