Will this kill my fish?!?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know a lot of people who use salt in their tanks on a regular basis..Me being 1 of them.
Solar salt, kosher salt, and aquarium salt...All the same thing...Pure NaCl..
i don;t think that this will cause any loss of fish....And is totally safe to use in every water change.
Im gonna look for the thread I started about this a few weeks ago, so u can see what everyone said about salt.

I agree with lupin, any presence of salt greater than the fish has evolved to deal with will be detrimental in the long-run (tiny chance of the salt-resistance ich... but I have seen it happen once).

To answer your original question: the only difference between NaCl and Iodized NaCl is... Iodine. In the amounts added to table salt it is not much higher than the fish could possibly come across in the wild. If you are only treating for shorts amount of time, then the fish will not even notice it.

You do not use salt unless your fish has health issues otherwise you run the risk of killing all your fish because their osmoregulatory system is damaged gradually by the presence of salt and even developing diseases such as ich resistant to salt thus salt becomes very much useless by the time you have a real need for it. Why would you add salt in your tank for no valid reason?

it promotes the health of your fish. so why wouldnt i?

How exactly does is "promote the health of your fish"?
IMO it's unnecessary and can actually be detrimental over time.

What it does is aggravate the fishes system to over-produce it's slime coat to make it harder for ich to be re-introduced to the fish.

It's not a necessity for the fish to live since they wouldn't be able to get it in natural surroundings.

No bidy ever thought second-hand smoke would cause any problems either ;)

I use morton's canning and pickeling salt. even table salt is fine. the iodine is too weekly concentrated to have any adverse effects.

just make sure it is Sodium Chloride.

ha well if it helps prevent ich then why not do it? i know it wouldnt happen in their natural surroundings but they arent in their natural surroundings are they?;)

It does not prevent ich but it does kill the pathogens. Preventing the ich from entry cannot be done at all by any means other than quarantining the new fish. Ich will almost certainly invade the tank if you fail to quarantine and once it becomes used to the presence of salt, it develops resistance thus making it harder for the aquarist to eliminate it.
