will this little guy make it?

Yeah, arowanas are pretty popular at the LFS here. My gf likes the colors of salt water fish so i'm considering setting up a discus tank for the salt water look. Daily 50 percent water changes as juvies though. Sounds like more work then just maintaining a salt water tank

personally i would take a nicely planted freshwater tank over salt water tank any day. to me it just doesn't seem too well fit in a house unless the green plants in a fresh water tank. 50% daily water change is a big tough tho. I would suggest to get a large rubbermaid bucket to store enough aged water right next to the discus tank and put a pump in it to pump water into the tank after you taking 50% of the water. (if you can use something like a python with long tube to outside or bathroom that would be easier to remove all those water)
you can heat the aged water with heater if needed before adding into your tank so it'll be easier to the fish. and you don't have to use chemical to remove all those chlorine.

Yeah, that's what alot of the people in the discus section seem to be doing. I take small trips out of town too often to handle daily water changes. I'd be being held hostage by a fish tank. A recipe for disaster for me.

Honestly, she'd be happy with something as simple as a fancy gold fish or guppies. lol. I'm just trying to find the happy medium. Something pretty enough for her but interesting enough for me to want to take care of them. If only datnoids were more available

if you are willing to buy online, I think aquascape has some now.

That might be worth a try. I didn't even think of checkin out aquascape. Not a bad price either. I'll see if i can talk her into it and start setting up a tank. A local guy i had been thinkin about buying a 7 in black rhom off of just traded his straight up for a 12 inch dat.

First post! I used to be a member at predatoryfish. It has been awhile since I have kept fish, I just got a few RBP the other day. The last time I kept RBP's I had one that got picked on all the time, one time I came home and he was missing half his face! I seperated him and he healed up fine minus the eye, so since he had a blind spot I kept him seperate and he was just fine for a few more years before I gave him away. As long as no vitals were removed I would say he will be fine.

hey Nate, welcome :)
and congrats on the RBPs, what's your setup? post some pix :) we love pix here, good or bad the more the merrier :)
