1" plywood top and it wont sag at all. People way overbuild stands, when was the last time you heard of a stand failing completely?
Overbuilding is no big deal right? 450g of water on the floor with thousands of dollars of dead fish aren't a big deal either I guess.

Sagging is not the issue here.

$20 in lumber can make a big difference.

The horizontal 2x4s are all turned on their side, so the wider part is facing up. This would cause it to sag much more than if the thinner side was up, but he's go enough vertical supports that I doubt that will be a problem.

I'd go with it.

But i am pretty dangerous most of the time.

But like someone else said 20 bucks in lumber will clear all doubts.

2x4's are super cheap.

Well the tank will be a 8x3x2.5' plywood tank, lined with pond liner with 2 acrylic windows. I planned to skin the outside with 1/2" sanded plywood and put 3/4" on top of the stand, then the tank itself on top of that which would be 2x4's and I guess 3/4" plywood.

As for horizontal support, could I just screw some 2x4's into each of the vertical supports so that 4 posts are connected in the middle via a 2x4? Or would I be better off cutting the 2x4's into 45's and making some kind of "wedge" type thing.

If you skin it in PLy that will provide plenty of horizontal support. Just put a screw every 3-6 inches or so.

just screw the supports into the vertical supports. they are just to keep it all from bowing/falling outwards. you have enough support just need to keep it square you know what I mean?
