Hi guys this is the first sump ive used and im trying to design it correctly, the tank will be 8.5ft x 32" x 28" high with rtg/dat/polys and tinfoils and hopefully a tigrinus.
First thing will it work like this?
Second, will it be big enough,as im planning on two 2" drains and a single 1.5" or 1.75" return with something like a ocean runner 6500.
The dimensions of the sump are 48" x 18" x 18" and i will do it like this.

cheers steve

Anybody?

come on guys

1. Please explain what is circled in red? I'm not sure what you are talking about.

2. I think that your water level is too high. You are going to want the water level lower in case of a power outage.

It seems a bit over-designed. I would eliminate the 1" gaps if possible and just go with an over-under flow through design.

Hi pharoah the water level will be lower, there will be a 4"gap down to the first piece of glass the water flows over which flows onto the alpha grog which is media like porous rock,so now would that be ok?

Cheers steve

Can you show me where this gap is?

Overall, it is a bit overdone with all of the bio-media. You could probably remove a little of it to make more rrom for mechanical filtration.

Hi mate from the top of the pieces of glass that form the alphagrog compartment to the top of the tank,eg the 18" piece it will be just over 4",its just the way ive drawn it a bit wrong, and the drains will be a bit higher too.
As for the mechanical, wouldnt the sponges in the first section be enough if not what would you suggest, could i take half the grog out and cover that with sponge.
I could make the first section bigger its just that when i picked the sump up for free, the first piece of glass is already there.
Will the size be ok for the size of tank and flow from the OR6500?

Cheers steve

Hi Steve,

I also agree that you should make your mechanical area larger. One of the main reasons why is all that bio load/uneaten food from the monsters that you will house will clog up that mechanical area fast.

If you do not have enough mech in your design, all that poop water would spill into your bio area and clog that side up too. Your sump is a decent size, make your mech area large enough so that cleaning the Mech will be fast and easy and not a tight squeeze.

Overall, nice design, jyou ust need to fine tune it a little bit. Just from seeing your sketch, I know your capable of making this sump. I just wanted to add my $0.02.

I am looking at your design again.

Maybe you dont have to take that first area out.

Just use your alpha area that is circled in red by Pharaoh as your Mechanical area. You mentioned sponges. I would get that thick japanese pond material of all different coarses and layer it. Your water would probably be sparkling clean and clear from all that jap mat.

Good Game, polished.

Hi bomber and pharaoh, would you double the width of the mech then and still have the other two sections or just do a larger wet/dry?

Cheers steve
