Will this sump be ok for my new 300g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im still confused with this whole sump thing

were the water comes into the sum from the main tank you have course sponge the space looks very small how will you get the sponges out to clean them past the drain pipe

Hi richard they wont be in one piece and obviously the tank is 18" wide and the drains are 2" so should be plenty of room and im hoping the sump will be on some kind of slide so i turn the valves off and slide the sump towards the front of the cabinet, this is only as a last resort though,i hope i plan it well enough so i can maintain it with the minimum of p.i.t.a:D

im very confused about all this i have been told i need weirs even that is new to me

just out of intrest who in making your new tank ?

are they making it on site ?

how deep are you going on the tank ?

im having problem with getting a quote everyone i have contacted just dont seam to get back to me

Hi richard if this is for your new tank than you need weirs for a sump or a overflow box bot i dont think you will want to go down that route, basically you need a weir to let the dirty water flow back to your sump which,if i explain what i am having on my 8.5ft x 32" deep x 28" high is say in the rear right hand corner i will have two holes,1 for a 2" drain and 1 for a 1.5 or 1.75" return from my sump pump which supposedly flows 6500lph.These two holes are surrounded by a sealed glass tower/eg two pieces of glass nearly the height of the tank which when put at 90° to eachother and the rear corner of the tank form your weir. The water flows over that by gravity taking all the crap off the surface and into your sump.
I am also having the other 2" drain as a corner weir in the other rear corner, this just takes 1 piece of glass put in at say 45° to the rear and side glass and does the same as the other drain.
If you order a marine tank from say nd aquatics you can specify what weirs you want.it is in effect a marine tank being used as a fw.

Try boss or nd aquatics for your tank, they should be fine with any size, and yes mine is a build on site or even your lfs,you never know.

Hope ive not confused you

heres an updated version, and before you say it,yes the heaters will be alot lower, will the return line be ok for the size of pump?

cheers steve
From this sketch, it still needs all the measurements worked out but It looks really good.

I can't wait to see you make this. Your water will be very sparkling clean. Great design.

Thanks bomber but are the dimensions not ok as they are apart from the second bit of glass needs to be a bit higher?

Cheers steve

I'm kinda worried about how small the pump section is. As water evaporates the water level in that section is going to drop really quick. You need a much bigger pump section. That way evaporation will have a far smaller effect on the water level in your sump.

I called ND they want £3k just for the tank as it 30 deep so needs to be 15mm glass

some companys say if its 27 deep then 12mm glass so £2k for the tank

Hi richard how big is the tank youre being qouted for?
my average price is about £1200 to £1300,although i have had £2800 and £2600 is yours roughly double the size? and mine is 12mm glass and these prices are just the tank and weirs,no cabinet etc
Is this the kind of price you were expecting?
can you give me the number for the place you got the 2k quote and il try them for mine.
Hi badass does it make that much difference? i can add an inch or inch and a half but the pump isnt very big and it will be covered as much as possible to stop the evaporation .

cheers steve
