My personal experience with Bettas in a community tank is they get killed very fast, and quite violently. First community tank betta aggravated the wrong discus and I watched helplessly as he got shredded, adult discus can do damage and do it fast. The second on got chased out of the tank (kept finding him hiding on the spray bar) by bleeding heart tetras, a school of them.
 
I have a male betta in a 55 gallon planted, his other tankmates are a female german blue ram, 5 yoyo loaches, BN Pleco, 5 White Cloud Minnows.
 
You need to make sure you cycle your tanks before you add anything new. And instead of buying new fish maybe you should get a lid for your 55g. Maybe the reason your osacar is jumping out of your tank is because of ammonia poisioning.

I test the water everyday.... i got no nitrates, no nitrites and .25 ammonia... I always change when it gets high... im not stupid, just impatient
 
try to earn up to set up your tanks and then buy stock. but for your 20 gal i would get like 5 tiger barbs they pretty kewl and maybe some other livebearers
 
and by giving up the oscar it will save me money by not having to buy a 75G... which I can get one cheap and I still might buy it it just depends on what my mom says...

and Just for kicks the 75G comes with 2 12" oscara and 2 4" rainbow sharks... ALL GOING TO LFS
 
well, the only reason I upgraded in first place is cuz whenever i bought my first tank I was dumb enough to throw a oscar in it... ( it was my 20g)

You made an entire thread about ideas for a top for that tank and you got some good ideas! Admit it-you just don't want the Oscar or you'd have gotten the eggcrate like I told you to do :screwy:. It's ok not to want a fish, just admit it. Don't blame it on the fact that a known jumping fish jumps and you 'have no lid'. Not to come down on you but sheesh, Oscars are my favorite fish & so few people give a flip about them.
