Will this work?

Ctenopoma is hit or miss. If you have a bad one it may put the jewel in line early, a passive one would not be a threat. Maybe if you made offerings of mid sized convicts or large kribs for the jewel to focus its aggression on? Bonus is the fry are feeders for bichirs and ctenopoma.

I mean I can always throw the male in my 125g with my oscars and JD so do you think its worth trying?
One other thing I forgot to mention about my Frempongi is that he’s an extremely voracious predator with a deceptively large mouth. He is more voracious and eats relatively larger food items than any Oscar I’ve had.

I wouldn’t put a Ctenopoma with mine, I haven’t tried tank mates at all, but his behavior leads me to believe he would probably beat the crap out of any tank mates. He bangs the glass extremely hard at any thing that gets near the tank

J Joshuakahan That fish is sweet! I have heard the elongatus only get 6-7" and are more timid but if I saw any aggression I would do some rearranging. Deadeye Deadeye only had to starve for like 3 days the ctenopoma started eating some chopped smelt I was feeding the bichirs. I will try to get some full tank pics not much to look at now its more just for me to keep tabs on progress

Thanks, this is the only 5 star I’ve kept, I’ve read that the frempongi is the most peaceful and the elongatus is second. 6-7” inches is what I’ve read too. It might work, just be careful, I’ve never tried any tank mates with mine, I’ve just read all the 5 stars are incredibly aggressive and am hesitant to try any, but I’m thinking about it

If this helps, I just added a couple pimelodus blochi to my H Frempongi tank and he’s chasing them a little but not trying to kill them. He doesn’t seem thrilled about it, probably since he’s had the tank to himself for a few months.
