absolutely pbass eat fish naturally yes pellets are cheaper but quarantined feeders will improve his mental state hes a predator let him be a predator dont tame him but pellets are a great addition to his diet i feed my kels and brokos Frozen bloodworms, freeze dried krill and crystal river shrimp, tilapia and pellets ive been using vita chem also once a month i buy 100 feeders im not power feeding my fish most of us do and have done that it helps get them past the initial stress stage from there birth to about 6 inches but you tend to miss the more suttle changes doing that imo

I bought 20 rosies and dropped maybe 5-8 in his tank thinking itd be a while before he could eat them but i figured hed still try and somehow he choked down 2 and is still going for more but when i go up to the tank he swims away:/

DEFINITELY decorate the tank - he will feel much more comfortable with rocks / plants (fake or live) Live food at this size is a must, if only to get him fattened up. When he has a good feeding response, start trying other things. Guppies are much better for him at this size. You don't want to overwhelm him.

Thanks you so much for that and its a 29 gallon. Would a few rosy reds be ok as dithers and then he can just eat them when he big enough?

fish junkie is right and adds some good advice. You should do these things if you want to be successful.

Here's my two cent's on this... First off, thaw the frozen blood worms in a cup of hot water before feeding, do not just huck a frozen cube of blood worms in and expect him to eat, this goes for any frozen foods... Thaw and pour a few in at a time... Make sure he sees them dropping.. Also a 29gal is fine as a grow out tank for a lil while but I would recommend you add a small cat fish to eat any uneaten food that falls to the bottom and isn’t going to be eaten by the cichla. This way you’re not stressing him out trying to net out any uneaten food after every feeding and the catfish helps keep things cleaned up... Keep your temp at 86 degrees and add lil aquarium salt. I also find cichla do better with "friends" Meaning if you can get one or two more to grow out with him it’s better, they all will do great with each other assuming they are all around the same size.

Should i be worried about the white spot on his lip.i think he just may have hit the gravel after getting a feeder. Theres no other spots onhis body at all

I'd keep an eye on it, but should be fine!

Good call on getting him a buddy or two, this will help out hugely with his stress!

Be careful with feeders bud... I'm guessing you don't treat them before feeding them..?? If your not treating them (for at least two weeks) then you should keep them in a 5 galling bucket with a sponge filter and only drop one at a time in your cichla tank (what he'll eat in that one setting) if he don't eat them right away take it out and try again later... This way you don't have ich infested feeders swimming and living in the same tank....IMO
