Thanks Mr P.
One reason I like the 'common' plecs like those is they are hardy and easy to care for. Good food and good water and they thrive. :)

I just took this group shot, 3 of the 4 plecs in my 50gal tank. It has plenty of caves and logs, but for some reason this small one under the filter is the favourite, even if the big fella cant fit in it. The others just queue up :grinno:

But this bunch seem to live together fairly peacefully.

well they are no more territorial towards other species than many other Loricariidae. If you were working with that frame of mind you wouldn't be keeping plecos together at all.

Not true at all. Some plecos are a lot more territorial towards each other than other types are.

For example, clown plecos are an example of the plecos which will very happily live together, while royals are examples of plecos which are very territorial towards other plecos, especially their own kind. A royal would try to kill another royal, on the other hand a clown pleco wouldn't try do the same to its own kind.

With stocking plecos successfully and properly, you have got to take into consideration stuff like this. I have never seen anyone with a great deal of knowledge on pleco's recommend mixing royals with each other or similarly sized plecos etc etc.
If you want a royal pleco, the best thing is to have it as the only pleco in the tank- the pleco will be happier this way, and so will its tankmates.

I never said that there isn't a range of how territorial some plecos are... be a pretty stupid statement considering the magnitude of the Loricariidae family. I am merely disagreeing that the Baryancistrus sp. can't be kept with other species and shouldn't. Yes I'd think twice about keeping two of the same together though.

Hm well my common and sailfin plecos turned out to be pretty territorial towards each other as they matured, and they don't even have a reputation like royals do for being particularly territorial/agressive plecos.

Since my sailfin and common plecos, i have taken so much care when it comes to stocking to plecos- i was fortunate, i could afford to buy each common and sailfin its own tank, but other people may not be so fortunate and may not have the money/space/time etc to get each pleco its own tank.
Rehoming fish can be a heartbreaking process, IMHO, even if you manage to get a royal to co-exist with other plecos, it is not going to be happy to do so. It will probably always be stressed at least to a certain extent. I think as a fishkeeper, you should have the fishes best interests i.e. its health and welbeing at heart, the chances that a royal will not get along with other plecos around its own size or whatever is pretty risky and a risk that shouldn't really be taken IMHO.

I think it comes down to people wanting more and more fish regardless of what the current fish think about them. But i think if you really want a royal pleco, you should really keep it alone as this is in many ways the best thing to do. There are a lot of reasons why it is unwise to give royals pleco tankmates, and there are a lot of reasons wise it is wise not to give royals pleco tankmates etc.

Why do you think royals should be kept with other plecos? Is there a single reason that has either fishes best interests at heart etc?
