Dang I turn off my filter almost everynight and turn it on when I wake up. None of the fish are breathing hard though. Actually, I dont even have a filter, its just a powerhead.

I dont have to pay utilities, so not worried about that.

Im trying an experiement with no filter tanks. I do daily waterchanges like 10-25%, so I think its fine.

your absolutly nuts man!!

lemme guess, those water changes are done once a week? :screwy:

with arowanas they need the current to breath....

That sucks man, sorry for your loss. I woulda fried those bass up in the quickness though.

Think about it, Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, streams, Have no conventional filter like tanks. Just plants an such, But you should leave something in the tank to create water flow. Currents help distribute O2 threwout the tank an give the fish resistance when there swimming.

That is my worst nightmare:( ..... I lost power for ONLY 5 hours saturday and lost two 4" clown loaches and one 8" xingu I.:swear: The fish in all my tanks where gasping at the surface. I will be buying a generator by the end of this week so that this will not happen again....ever.

Then to top it all off one of my 11" gars jumped ship last night throught a 2"x 6" gap in my canopy.....:( seems like this has been a bad week in the fish keeping world for a few peeps here.

marlboro - even with this experiment you don't want fish in stagnant water, leave the powerhead on all the time.

What fish do oyu have in there and how long has the tank been unfiltered?

The tank has been non filtered the whole time it been running, about 3-4 months. I keep the powerheads (2) on during the day, but it gets loud when im trying to sleep, and the tank is 6" from my bed. I got some giant danios, congo tetra, ATF, geophagus, gachua, and 2 peacock cichlids. When I wake up in the morning I always check to see how the fish are handling the stagnant water, and none of them are gasping or anything of that nature, so I figure the plants are helping somewhat. I dont recommend people trying non filter tanks, but Ive dont it before and have some experience, and I do recommend keeping live plants in your tank even if its the cheap kind, like anachris which really helps oxygeninate the water.
