Wolf fish cohabitation?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I rolled the dice on cohabiting my wolffish. I've got tanks at two different houses, in the process of moving them...my 55 needs to be reframed, and I don't have the time. I seen that my smallest mala was getting beat on pretty badly in my 36. I know he wasn't going to make it in big tank, so I added him about a week ago to the 75 with my black. No issues after several days, so I added the second mala. Wish me luck.

Looks like he's just full to me. Looks good. And I'd choose a black over a red cause of the look and in your case, the more valuable harder to get wolf for a more even trade. Here's mine coming at me from across the tank flaring. View attachment 1183840View attachment 1183841

Looks like you have a nice ornate! Any issue with your wolf? My hyper aggressive flower horn just ignores my ornate and endli.

Quick question for the wolf fish keepers...I've seen a huge difference of coloration in my mala. My larger mala has been extremely light colored lately. Any idea what causes the changes? Stress?

That's pretty pale coloration there.

Is he eating as usual? Any signs of harassment?

At a glance, I would say it is stressed out. The colour of your substrate are pretty dark; so it is unlikely the fish is adapting to a lighter background.

Sometimes this will happen when fish are fed a lot of shrimp and foods with thiaminase.

If your water good and has a good diet. No tank-mates giving any problems like the curu next to it then I don't think will ever know.

Your curupira is pretty light colored too.. Maybe it's their diet as suggested, don't think stress, I find they usually get darker from that.

No visible signs of harassment. Fins are good, no gashes or anything. I do hear the occasional ruckus after lights out. I have been feeding exclusively earthworms/night crawlers for the past month or so. I was debating getting some feeders and putting them in qt so I could try them. I also have frozen krill, which I know the Malas will take. Do you guys think I should add some dithers just in case?

The mala used to be the top dog in the tank, he has quit eating in front of me...but from the belly size he has gotten some food lately. The smaller mala and the curu eat right away.

Vary the dirt more. My guy loves massivore. You can feed plenty of frozen foods such as tilapia, market prawns etc. there's no point in feeders they don't have much if any nutritional value. You can add dithers if you want, but if you don't want to and don't feel the need to don't.

First serious trouble. Heard something last night, and this evening I seen the bite mark. The only thing I've got handy to separate into is the 150 that houses my flowerhorn. I'm not sure what's safer. Might be able to set up a 36 later this week.
