Would I post questions regarding my newly acuired wolf fish in here??? Not sure if it should go under this section or bottom dwellers thx.

this section is fine.

After searching through this forum it seems I am in the right section. Well, I have a few different questions.
1.) I already have some gravel layed down as a base but from what I've read wolves like sand. Can I purchase sand and lay it over top or would I be better off removing the gravel and adding sand? I'm hoping it's as easy as laying a good second layer of sand over the existing gravel. How do I go about doing this while the fish is in the water and the tank is completely filled? I have an undergravel filtration system and was hoping to hook up some power heads at the top of the tank (tubes run up towards the top and the power heads would sit on top of that, I think you get the idea).
2.) Resources are tight right now and I dont have $50 to spend on a decent piece of drift wood. Is there any cheap alternatives to buying/finding one versus purchasing one at a lfs?
3.) I have two power heads to hook up to complete the under gravel filtertration system but also have a bigger one that I could mount at the bottom of the tank to keep circulation going down there. Would this be too much current for the fish?
4.) I also have to pick up some live plants today, is there anything in particular that I should know about live plants prior to putting them into the tank?

Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm just trying to get the tank set up right for the new fish in terms of environment.

i have wolves on sand on gravel and it doesn't seem to make a difference to them. others will be able to answer your substrate questions more thorougly but i think it would be helpful if you let us know what kind wolf you have.

i've seen the common ones on everything from barebottom to gravel. about removing substrate. i don't have experience with undergravel filtration so i don't know the ramifications of layering sand over gravel but i recently changed from gravel to sand and it was pretty easy. i lowered the water level and just used a net to scoop out all the gravel then replaced it with the pre-sand. wasn't any trouble at all. i didn't even remove the fish and they were fine.

Well, if it isn't a huge ordeal I would prefer to leave the existing gravel in there. He doesn't seem to mind it right now. I've just noticed a lot of owners choose to have sand at the bottom. However, I've also seen some with bare bottom. The power heads would complete the undergravel filtration set up but the previous owner of the fish had a power head at the bottom of the tank to provide a small current. Does meijer sell live plants for fish tanks? I'm gonna have to check the web for lfs.

here's a picture of my new "lil" guy....

that gravel is fine you don't need to change it and sand doesn't work we'll with under gravel filters it just falls threw the openings in it

the aren't to active dureing the day and like to just sit there so adding a power head to the under gravel filter would be fine but the wolf won't like a strong current at the bottom of the tank they come from calm rivers and streams the mostly hang out in pools that form in rivers when they get older so current isn't needed

as for cheap decoration you can go out and find drift wood your self if you have a lake or river near by just look for wood thats been under the water for a while or just a nice piece of wood for decoration just clean it off we'll make sure theres no fungus or anything and soak it for a while till it sinks if it is not water logged and doesn't sink on its own you may need to tie it to a rock so it will sink make sure you rinse it we'll with clean water before adding it to the tank if you used any cleaner or chemicals to clean the wood
